ISSUE80: All the students should be required to take courses in the sciences, even if they have no interest in science.

Syllabus: disagree

1.        Admittedly, science courses do benefit the student well whose majors are nonscience as the trend that various disciplines interact with each other. And it seems that this trend would be irresistible.
2.        If the students take majors which are not science such as music, literature or paint, it would be of no use to them.
3.        interest serves as a teacher to everyone. In all ages, it is the interest that promote scientists to explore the unknown fields of the universe the thus make huge contributions to both the science and the society in that with the applying science knowledge to real life science have facilitated our life with convenient instrument and made life easier and more comfortable.

Time:9:48—10:36

As the author of the statement indicates, all the students should be required to take courses in the sciences no matter whether they are interested in them because science is the distillate of wisdom and more or less it would be helpful to students to some extent. However, in my views, I find the speaker’s assertion indefensible from both an empirical and a normative standpoint.

On the one hand, if the students take majors which are not science such as music, literature or paint, it would be probably of no use to them. What is more, to the artists, exquisite art tact and abundant art knowledge seems more helpful and beneficial than science. There is no better example than the famous Chinese painter Xu Beihong. Needless to say, he is a well-known artist with the special ability to draw horses and his paintings of horse are so vivid that as if they are real. And it does not hold him from becoming a excellent painter even that he knows little of science. Famous experts are famous not depend on their rich science knowledge but their great achievements and contributions to their own fields.

On the other hand, especially for those students who even have not any interests in science, it is of no use or sometimes even harmful to force them to take science courses. There is an old saying in China that interest is the best teacher. And in all ages, it is the interest that promote scientists to explore the unknown fields beyond human’s knowledge and thus make a huge contributions to both the science and the society in that with the applying science knowledge to reality science have facilitated our lives with convenient vehicles and advanced thoughts and therefore made our lives easier and more comfortable. Let us imagine, students who are not interested in science would only remember perhaps some facts or axioms or formulas without full understanding of them even if they are force to have science lessons because without interests they do not even have the power to study the courses with all their hearts. Accordingly, requiring all the students to take courses in sciences seems to be a extremely waste of time and money.

Admittedly, sciences are the distillate of wisdom and science courses do benefit the student well whose majors are nonscience according to the trend that various disciplines interact with each other more than before and it seems that the trend will be irresistible in the future. Therefore, it is a wise idea to give the student right to choose to attend science courses if they have interests and wise to do so.

In the final analysis, it seems to arbitrary and unreasonable to make all the students to take science courses because it is not indispensable for those whose majors are nonscience and do not have the interests and perhaps the best way to deal with it is to let the students to make their own decision to decide whether to attend course of science or not.
