The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

In the galaxy, there are so many stars, some stars are near the earth, some stars are far from the earth, even some remote stars are billions of light-years away from us, so that they may have died since we see them. So does the greatness of individuals. In the course of human event, some giants can be recognized by their contemporaries, and unfortunately, some giants was neglected by their contemporaries, only after decades the greatness of them can be decided by their descendants.

To some extent, the giants always ahead the time of their living, some of them ahead several years, some ahead decades or centuries. Human beings tend to respect and cheer for the things they understand, sneer they feel vague; common sense tell us that the farther contribution from our time the harder we can understand. So that the contribution of some giants can be understand after several years, and them will gain respect from the public, such as Bill Gates. However, it a petty that some greatness can not be recognized until many years ago.

As we know, in some fields, especially those practical areas, the greatness of individuals are easier be recognized, because they can close to our daily lives and we can understand it easily. So does the fields of business and political, the success of Bill Gates is a typical example, he climbed to the peak of world wealthiest in his 40s, he also gain the name of the biggest benefactor in the world due to his 'Bill&Malena Gates foundation' which support the education and eliminate poverty; obviously, his greatness has been widely recognized in the world.

Unfortunately, some giants were neglected, even sneered, by their contemporaries, it is major concentrate in those academic fields. Copernicus, a great Polish astronomer and mathematician, who founded the theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun; the theory threw down the Ptolemaic system which had occupied the field of astronomy and supported by Roma Curia. As a result, he was prosecuted by Roma Curia, and Bruno, who is his follower, was sentenced to death. HIs theory was widely accepted until one centuries latter, and lead to the Renaissance to some extents.

In sum, the greatness of individuals can be recognized by either their contemporaries or their descendants or both. In my opinion, the question is not important, because as the stone can not stop the generation of seeds, the greatness can be recognized by the society sooner or latter. As the progression of science and technology, the greatness is closer than ever before, and we can understand them sooner and easier; it is sure that the lag between greatness of individuals and the decided will be minimized in the future. I hope that we can give the necessary respect to those giants before they die.
