------题目------
The following appeared in a memo from the sales manager of Eco-Power, a company that manufactures tools and home appliances.
'Many popular radio and television commercials use memorable tunes and song lyrics to call attention to the products being advertised. Indeed, a recent study of high school students showed that 85 percent could easily recognize the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants. Despite our company's extensive advertising in magazines during the past year, sales of our home appliances declined. Therefore, to boost company profits, we should now switch to advertisements featuring a distinctive song.'
------正文------
In the memo, the manager of Eco-power recommends that substituting advertisements featuring a distinctive song for written ads to boost the company's profits. To support his claim, the manager cites several lines of evidence. Careful scrutiny, however, reveals that none of these evidences lends credible support to the claim.
First of all, the argument rests on the assumption that the shrink of the Eco-power's profits is attributable to the company's unadvisable advertisements policy. However, the president fails to offer any evidence to support this assumption. Absent of such evidence, it is entirely possible that other factors rather than the advertisement policy are responsible for the reduction of the company's profits, such as poor managements, the recession of the appliance business overall. In short, without ruling out these and other alternative explanations for the decrease of the company's revenue, the manager cannot justifiable recommends that switching advertisements policy would be effective to boost the company's profits.
Additionally, the manager overlooks the disparities between the leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants and Eco-power Company, a home appliance company, which renders the analogy between them unwarranted. For example, the consumers, which they serve, are entirely different. Experience tells us that the home appliance company usually serves adults, who have adequate money to purchase those appliances, while the food businesses cater to high school students, and thus food businesses maybe successful by air advertise to let the high school students know their products; however, it is entirely possible that the Eco-power cannot reach to its consumer by the same means. Moreover, the two businesses supply different products with distinct properties. Drink and food are consumed every day, while people may not change their home appliance frequently like the food and drink. In a word, the advertisements means, which is effective in food businesses, would not necessarily successful in home appliance business.
Finally, the manager fails to provide detail information about the study. The manager fails to inform us about the randomness and the representative of the study. In addition, recognizing the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants does not necessarily means that these students would buy them. For short, the study the president cited prove nothing to support the argument.
To sum up, the argument is untenable as it stands. To better strengthen the argument, the manager would provide stronger evidence that it was the wrong advertisement policy that was attributable to the shrink of the company's profits. Moreover, the manager should offer clearer evidence that students who recognize the tunes to promote drink and food would buy them.
