Do rituals and ceremonies help define a culture, as the speaker claims? I agree the speaker that rituals and ceremonies play a significant role in displaying and strengthening the culture. Yet in my view only through rituals and ceremonies one can not yield a whole picture of the culture.

First of all, every culture in the world has its unique set of rituals and ceremonies, which may be originated long ago, passed down by generations to generations, and at last become the symbols of the culture. Consider the most important festival in China- the Chinese new year. Every year of that time members of a family gather together from all over the country to have a feast in which they eat Chinese traditional foods, watch dragon dancing and talk with each other. These activities make people have a more clear sense that they belong to their families and recognize their positions both in the family and in the society. On the other hand, the Thanksgiving Day that is also a carnival in US nevertheless serves a different original function: to give thanks to the Indian who help their ancestors to settle down in North America. Simply put, it is clear that different cultures have different ways in their ceremonies, which make them distinguished from each other and preserve the cultural identity.

However, the way of rituals and ceremonies is only an aspect of the whole culture in that culture contains almost all the achievements and thinking in the history of a society, including arts, science, and law. Moreover, even the people's behaviors in daily life, such as the language, dress and dietary habit, can reflect the heritage, value, and ideas of the culture. The use of tools of eating foods is a case in point. While Americans usually have meals by knife and fork, Chinese often use chopstick instead. One can not tell which way is the better, either of which can achieve the desirable results and is prefer by people from different cultures, but can learn that- they are not just two entirely different methods of eating, but also two different ways of thinking upon which the culture relies.

In the contemporary society, due to the great impact of globalization, people of developing country tend to abandon their native culture and fully accept the values, ideas and even ceremonies of western culture. In China, we can see many young people in jeans eating fast food of KFC, seeing American films, imitating the behaviors of foreign basketball stars. Some even take part in the foreign festivals, such as Christmas and Valentine's Day. Giving up the traditional ways, they may be fashioned and cool now. Nevertheless, they do not realize that they then belong to neither Chinese nor western cultures and would lose themselves latter in their lives because what they learn is just the external aspects of the foreign culture. They should either stick to their own culture, or learn the external values and ideas of another one.

In the last analysis, culture is not a simple matter. One can indeed learn about a culture by observing its ceremonies and rituals and the behaviors of people in daily life. Meanwhile, one should know that to appreciate a culture completely, a person should fully understand internal values and thoughts of the culture.

Your response is what can define a culture, and this is far away from that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Just a little emendation will make a better beginning.
