Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.

Rituals and ceremonies are in the content of many kinds of culture, which even have been recognized as a symbol of a race. However, someone hold that without rituals and ceremonies, society or groups of people have a diminished sense who they are. I doubt this statement, and realize that rituals and ceremonies indeed help define a culture, the value and the identity of a society or groups will not disappear without their presence.

Rituals and ceremonies roots in cultures, they can reflect the value of a race, making them unique from others. There exist various races; people distinguish them by inspecting their ritual and ceremonies. In our world, there are more than 1000 races, which have different living manners, inevitable with divers rituals and ceremonies. The different ways of birthday party, wedding, and funeral, derived from their values and believes. For example in east red is a sign of luck, so in their wedding a bride should wear red dress; while in the west world, a bride wears white dress, which is the sign of purity.  As we all know many races hold the ceremonies to pray for the blessing from the nature, in some African tribes, people worship sun as the gods, while in some Asian tribes, moon is considered as the sublime. Therefore, we can see that ritual and ceremonies originally reflect the thoughts of a race, their activity in the rituals and ceremonies is the image of their thoughts in heart, through which people express their hopes, blessing, and idealities. People are required to follow the rituals, because they hope themselves conform to their values. Therefore, Rituals and ceremonies to some extent help define a culture, because they are part of culture.

However rituals and ceremonies is helpful to define a culture, they are not the whole things of a culture. A culture of a race is not only reflected by its rituals and ceremonies. The tradition living manners and the literature and philosophy works of a race identically involved in the culture. Different races have their distinct characters, for example it is always said by people that Frenchmen are romantic, the British are gentle, and the Americans are creative. All of these is the facet of a culture, they are not the ceremonies and ritual, but the values and the believes of a culture. Cultures are expressed by the methods of people’s talking, thinking, and performing. The living manner indeed defines the culture. Moreover, the famous literature and philosophy works is the record of a culture. For example, we can see the history and lives from Homer’s works. Through which we can learn the culture of the ancient Greece. Hence the definition of a culture is not only the rituals and ceremonies, which is only a small proportion of culture.

I do not cognize that a societies and groups of people have a diminished sense who they are if rituals and ceremonies disappear. The USA is a race smelter; they did not have the uniform ceremonies and rituals. But his citizens are filled of the nation spirits and social responsibility. They are clearly know how to build their nation, how to make their country more beautiful and how to make themselves live happier. The common values and the lasting believe such as fairness, freedom, and justice are the essence of their culture. People will not forget their sense of who they are, after the vanishing of the rituals and ceremonies, due to their faith from their races or societies.

In conclusion, rituals and ceremonies are the aspects of the definition of a culture, but not the whole. The sense of who they are will permanently exists accompanying the values and believes in people's hearts.
