In many cases, I believe that the evaluation of greatness of individuals from the ones live after them is more objective than that of their contemporaries. After all the long time after them may give people chances to do more thinking and checking on the greatness. However, there indeed exist some greatness can be decided by their contemporaries.

First of all, descendents would indeed realize the greatness of certain contributions which experience wide comparisons and tests of time. As is well known, great theories or inventions are often advanced or invented by great genius whose ideas may not be easily understood and accepted by average people, even normal scientists. We can take Einsten's story as an example. When Einsten first published his theory--theory of relative, there is no people believe his notion since his abstruse idea has been far beyond the knowledge limitation of other scientists, let alone average people. However, with the development of science and its application in some field, although most of us still can not understand it, the theory has been generally accepted in scientific circle, and Einsten has been regarded as one of the most gifted scientists for his contribution.

Besides, in the past centuries, people usually held a prejudice on innovation, and have a nature to refuse to accept new ideas. In other words, they are inclined to maintain traditional conception and cognition. During the church's period, churches own the inviolable authorities, any one including those who are regarded as great figures now raise a new theory opposed to the doctrine of church will encountered prison even death penalty. Famous naturalist Darwin's theory of evolution based on natural choice is a good example. It is obviously contradicted with the church's believes that the existence of human is due to that of god, but not evolution. Thus his theory was sentenced as heresy and Darwin was compelled for a long time. Also, another figure Corpernicus is worth considering in this point, whose famous heliocentric theory drastically conflicted with the church's geocentric theory. Corpernicus's theory was considered as a misbelief, whereas it has been evaluated the greatness now.

While we claim that the greatness of individual can be better decided by their descendents, we cannot rule out some cases, especially the cases in realm of humanities and sociology, which may have direct and closed relationships with average people. In this point, we can take Teresa's experience as an example. Teresa, as an Albanian-born Indian nun, dedicated herself to relieving the suffering of India's desperately poor and dying people, thus she won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. It is believed that her contribution to Indian people cannot be forgotten or disvalued forever. With the similar experience, Martin Luther King's contribution that she dedicated herself to objecting to racialism, with no doubt, can be decided by the contemporaries as well as descendents.

In conclusion, due to the increasing development of human's cognition and knowledge, descendents have more advantage in evaluating the greatness of individual, in that they tend to be more objective and equitable. In spite of that, we have to admit that some greatness happened around normal people can be decided by contemporaries also.
