"The university community consists of three different worlds-the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Because each world operates on its own assumptions and has its own special habits of thinking, rarely is there meaningful interaction among the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences.
As the author of the statement indicate, it is commonly believed that today knowledge is divided into many seemly separate parts. The search in each parts is becoming deeper and deeper, nevertheless, the interaction among them is becoming less and less. In universities, which [are?] to create knowledge and pass it on, students are constricted in certain majors. The students major in science know little about the humanities, and vice versa . However, if you make an investigate[investigation] carefully, you will find that meaningful interaction among disciplines can be easily found in the progress of our society. With the splitting up of knowledge, some new fields of study emerge, which combine different knowledge. The most important [one] is that human knowledge is [the all and the one][give me some explanation ok?], and those classification is just man-made.
Although the different fields of study, mainly the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences, have their own special assumptions and habits of thinking, they really interact each other. A strong argument of my view can be found in the modern social sciences. As we all known, the modern social sciences are base[based] on statistics which is an important branch of mathematics, and mathematics is the diamond on the crown of science. Before the application of statistics, social sciences can only make some records just as we have seen in those history records. The demography, for example, can only tell how much [is]去掉 the population [was] [before]. However, with the help of statistics, now it can also analyze the structure of the population and do some prediction of the progress. Meanwhile, the development of modern social sciences also forces the statistics to advance so that it can provide more convenient and more [effective] tools.
The interaction among disciplines also exists between the sciences and the humanities. But this kind of interaction may be less obvious. Many great scientists in physics have deep[ly] understanding of art, and they all agreed that their knowledge in humanities often gave them inspirations and affect their attitude towards the objective world. Einstein, besides his well known work of "Relatives", is also an amateur musician. A picture in which Einstein played his violin is very famous because it clearly showed the other side of this great scientist. Yang Zhengning, a Noble Prize winner in physics, appreciate traditional Chinese literature well, and he can recite the whole "Mencius".
The [there] fields of knowledge is just a man-made classification. They all mixed together in the birth of human knowledge. In ancient Greece, those great thinkers talked about knowledge and wisdom but not physics or literature. Vinci, a famous Italian artist, is another good example. He was well known by his great paintings, but his talent in science is also outstanding. His manuscript of helicopter design is very similar to the real one today. The purpose of the classification of knowledge is for the deep search in each field, but it dose not mean that we should spilt them apart purposely. In front of a practical problem, we can get different solutions with different knowledge. Each solution alone is not complete and correct. The integration of these solutions makes the real answer to the problem. Moreover, the lack of knowing in other fields of study and the short sight in the full picture of human knowledge can badly withdraw our development in our own majors.
In sum, the meaningful interaction among the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences exists everywhere and we should encourage this kind of interaction.
