140The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."
------------------正文--------------------
The recommendation about raising salary and promotion for Professor Thomas is based on the assumption that without such a raise and promotion, professor Thomas will leave Elm city. To support his assumption the arguer mentions the professor's popularity among students and her donation for research. However, is the assumption reasonable? Is the Department Chairperson fitted for her? Is her indeed popular among students?

First of all, the assumption that without a raise and promotion professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college is unfounded. As we know, a professor would pay more attention to the academic level or atmosphere of a university rather than the salaries or promotion. Unless the arguer can provide information that Thomas is anxious climbers and has a bug about high salaries, which seems impossible for many professors, we have every reason to doubt the assumption about the professor's leaving.

In addition, although Thomas is popular among students and brought money to the university in research grants, this cannot indicate that she will has the ability and talent of leadership to manage a department well. If Thomas has no interest in management as a chairperson, it is more possible that this promotion may bring her much trouble rather than happiness. In my opinion, maybe providing more research finance to her will make her happy and work hard for the university.

Finally, the arguer fails to provide the information about the other professors' performance and salary. If many of her comrades perform as well as Thomas, however, the University mere give Thomas a raise of salary and a promotion, some of the excellent professors as Thomas will fell unfair even leave Elm City University for another college. In this case, the university will encounter a larger loss.

In sum, the argument for a raise of salary and a promotion provide important information to encourage excellent professors. However, before the conclusion about the salary raise and promotion is reached, a more complete understanding of the benefit of the recommendation is needed.
Nothing is important but love.

谢谢!

我开头也提是否真的popular的问题,后来忘说了:(
现在对于从来没看过的题就是这个水平了,确实没什么把握,所以剩下这几天一定要加油了:)
