Argument145
------题目------
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
------正文------
In this argument the author suggest that people who snore should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more. To bolster his argument the author cited a survey in which shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore, and stated the well-known fact that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds which is called apnea. It maybe reasonable at first sight, however close examinations reveal there several logic flaws with the argument.

First of all, the author fails to demonstrate the reliability of the study. Too little information was provided that we even cannot know who conducted the study, and how it was conducted, which are the basic factors to judge the reliability of a study. Besides, he author also fails to provide how many data which collected and whether they're large enough in size and can be representative of the whole. If it was conducted by a student group in a summer project or if the sample collected was not big enough, the author's suggestion that people who snores should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more, which depends on the study was groundless.

Secondly, even if study is reliable, the author unfairly assumes that snore cause obesity. However no evidence is provided to support that this is the case. The correlation that people who snore are more likely to gain weight does not suffice to draw the conclusion that there's a casual relationship between them. Obesity depends on many contingencies, such as eating too much food, lacking enough exercise and problems relating to genes etc. All these factors contribute to obesity, and common sense informs us they are probably the main factors. Without ruling out such possibilities author cannot confidently reach his conclusion.

Finally, even if the author can prove that snore causes obesity, his suggestion that eating less and exercising more is problematic. As the author reasons, it is because people are perturbed by the interruption of breathing which leave the person too tied during the day to exercise, we should take some measures to stop the apnea. Eating less and exercising more may be helpful to lose weight but not helpful to stop apnea. Unless the author can demonstrate that eating less and exercising more can lead to move the apnea away, I remain unconvinced about his suggestion.

In sum, the author's suggestion is unconvincing. To strengthen his argument he must show the reliability of the study and demonstrate that snore causes obesity. To better evaluate the argument, we need more information about who conducted the study, how was it conducted, we also need to know if eating less and exercising more can stop apnea.

2. 没有提出科学证据表明brief interruption which goes unnoticed at all会使人too tired,做梦也会影响睡眠质量

3. 即使打鼾是主要原因,应该建议打鼾的人想办法cure this disease,这样才能从根本上消除打鼾的影响

结论,虽然建议所有打鼾的人少吃和多锻炼是未必有效,thus站不住脚的,但是合理的饮食搭配和适当的体育锻炼would benefit most of people whether who snores or not. 另外,应该建议打鼾的try to cure the snore as a bothering disease.
Nothing is important but love.
