限时,用了不到40分钟,感觉有些地方没说清。比如effective没有定义。帮忙看看,还有一周就要考了。
"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student"

The society employs education to make its young people function well in the future society, thus education has much to do with the society and individual student. When it comes to how to make education truly effective, I would hence contend that only if it is designed to meet not only the individual needs and interests but also satisfy societal needs education can be truly effective.

To begin with, education has to meet social needs. If education fails to take into account what the society needs, students under such education will not behave well and even do some harm to the future society and hence education is obviously failed. For example, one of the social needs which are imposed on education is to instill in students sound moral values that is often not in accordance with students' needs or interests. Education must imbue students with healthy morality like honesty, patriotism, impartiality, friendship, and love; otherwise it is very likely that students cannot form their sound values system and hence that when they grow older they will be brats in the future society because of their unhealthy values such as ignorance of chasteness, superstition about astrology, and self-centered minds. If so, it undoubtedly means education does not effectively nurture young people to be good citizens who are considered as decent, wise, and accommodating people. "Values Clarification" movements in 70s and 80s last century best illustrates the aftermath of education deviating from social needs. Therefore, in order to effectively guarantee students' growing healthily, education should meet social needs.

Moreover, besides societal needs education should meet individual needs and interests of each student. Common sense tells us that if students demand to learn some courses, they will tend to devote themselves into learning these courses. In this situation, teachers can feel teaching is much more smooth and the quality of instruction is much higher. Additionally, when students are interested in some classes, they will also cooperate with teachers very well to study. For instance, a great deal of universities have adopted a measure that allows students to choose courses according to their own needs and interests. Many surveys about this measure indicate that students achieve better academic performance like higher grade average than before and teachers feel teaching is more effective after the implementation of choosing courses system. Therefore, as Confucius, an ancient Chinese educator, once put it as, "To be effective teaching must be carried out according to characteristics of each student."

In sum, education will be truly effective only when it is designed to meet social needs and the individual needs and interests of each student. Without accommodating to the society education cannot bring about good citizens; without meeting students individual needs education lacks efficiency. Thus it is necessary for educators to call for a balance between social needs and individual needs.
