Issue85: 654 words 45 minutes
Government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts.
Does the government funding threaten the integrity and prosperity of the arts? It may raise fierce controversy today since the government funding has both merits and harmfulness to the arts. However, I still insist that the government funding of the arts is deeply needed today.
To begin with, looking back to history, replete evidences have shown us the governments' funding could play a positive rile in the progress and prosperity of the arts. Since more funding and emphasis have been place on the filed of arts, more and more people would engaged in this field and consequently more opportunities for genius and rising stars would appear. Moreover, the positive view of government on the arts would of course make artists having more enthusiasm and devotion to their fields which could is the important factor to the progress of the arts. Consider the history of Renaissance. At that time, many royalties and churches gave financial supports and admirations to sculptors and often invited them to create works in their castles and sanctuaries. Such situation large served as incentives to the creative enthusiasm of sculptors in those today. Consequently, many famous sculptors appeared in the Renaissance period including Michelangelo. Therefore, from any perspective, the financial support and positive attitude of government to the arts would definitely help arts to seize a ever brilliant stage.
Moreover, let us consider the issue in term of contemporary society. One could not go no further to perceive that since the society today become more and more material-oriented and profits-oriented, artists have become more and more difficult to survive without the financial support, especially for those kinds of art which have less audiences and social attention. Lacking money to make these kinds of arts prosperous, artists are facing the crude fact that they have either change their fields or accepting the poverty even hunger. Moreover, not only artists, but also such kinds of arts are threatened to extinction. The most compelling example may be the situation of QinQiang, a distinctive music performance in remote region in China. Though QinQiang have few audiences who are largely minorities, it provides the significant function of maintain the cultural diversity and containing the feature of the history of Qin .However, today ,the special artistic music perform is facing a situation of extinction since government and society have paid little attention on the preciousness of it, let alone funding. Similarly, there still exists some other kinds of arts which are threatened by the cruel society. Thus, our government should spare no efforts to give them supports especially in the term of money.
However, admittedly, the funding of arts by governments more or less influences the direction of the field of arts today. It is obvious that government often tend to direct the creative procedure of arts by the potential way of giving them financial support. Most governments today would only support those artists who they consider having no passive and negative impact on their self-interests. By this way, many artists would change their devotion to cater for the government for the sake of their own survival. This in fact, makes artists depend more on the government and influence their original passion to make choice decision. Still remember those hacks works for the evil leader Saddam Hussein. Although their are named artists on the surface, the original function of arts which tends to serve for the interests for the public society have tarnish in their hearts. Nevertheless, in my observation, the merits of funding of the arts still outweigh the potential harmfulness it brings to the arts.
To sum up, governments funding of arts could play an effective and positive role in the progress of the arts, which have been demonstrated by the history. Moreover, in contemporary society, the financial support to arts have turned out to be significantly importance, even if the finding sometimes may serve for the evil and mean objective of governments' interests. |
