"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

In an era which makes the process of globalization a fair-sounding melody, the underlying theme is more and more fierce competition between nations. In order to win this battle, most nations have put education to the top position as a method that can guarantee the nation's very survival during the competition and further prosperity. Thus the question of when will education be truly effective naturally arouse. Is it when it meets the individual needs and interests of each student? The answer, however, probably is negative.

Which position should education should be put among others is something that the government concerns heavily and carefully. It is a strategic problem. As to actual process of education, the effectiveness of which is of more importance and thus need to be clarified. The overall goal of education is to cultivate each student to be a well-round competitor in the domestic market and further in the international battlefield. It not only requires students to have some special skills, but also well developed in characteristics, emotion, and the ability to effective communication. Therefore, when the process of education reflects these requirements, it should be considered as an effective one.

Thus, the next question is how can we achieve this effectiveness and ultimately the very goal of education? Someone may argue that only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student can education be truly effective. It is true, that personal needs and interests play a very important role in the process through which a student gain knowledge, skills and abilities. Einstein once said that interest is the best teacher. When it comes the subject that one is interested in, he will have higher enthusiasm to learn the subject. He will try his best to go as further and deeper as possible, and when he encounters some difficulties, the strong enthusiasm motivated by interests will probably overcome such hardness.

However, only considering the personal needs and interests is not enough. Imagine the situation, when one asks for classic music composited by Bach, another requires mathematics, and still a third one asks for the Baroque arts, what should the school do? It is simply impossible for the school to make its curriculum to meet exactly the very need and interests of its students. Furthermore, even assuming that school can provide its students with curriculum that will meet each student's personal needs and interests, the effort in doing so may already make this kind of education not a effective one. In fact, schools, especially colleges and universities, have already been concerning about the problem of individual needs and interests. In primary and secondary phases of education, schools have offered many selective courses for the students from which they can enjoy themselves after classes. In higher education phase, often the college and universities offer different majors from which the enroller can choose. In addition, there are even many schools in the community designed and established specifically for some kind of learning. These all, can be reviewed as an effort to meet the personal needs and interests of the students, while still, another part of education, those curriculum which society and the schools ask the students to master well, added by which, the education can be regarded as truly effective.

It is no doubt that there are some abilities, skills and knowledge a student must master regardless of his own interests. Reflected in the process of education, it is the schools' responsibility to offer courses relating to the skills mentioned above. For example, during the primary education, all the students are asked to acquire the knowledge of how to do some basic arithmetic, and the basic ability to read an article. Not only some basic skills are indispensable, but also the students should learn something relating to communication with each other and develop the sense of right and false, besides the sense of responsibility towards themselves and further the society and nation. For example, in the secondary education, courses relating to citizenships teach us that we should fight against crimes in society, such as theft, robbery and so on; while during the higher education, undergraduates are asked to attend courses teaching them how to develop the right view of value, life and the world and the ability to plan for their way of life. Many of the students feel that these courses do not meet their personal needs and thus of no value, they even fall asleep while attending this kind of classes. However, above all, from the education's point of view, such kind of courses are essential for the students to grow as a well-rounded peoples. It is the ultimate goal of education, the only when which are offered, education can be regarded as truly effective.

Nevertheless, as the social steps forward, the topic may remain a question, the answer to which may be rather a separated one. Different people may still hold different views, but as far as I concerned, the answer is quite clear: when the process of education recommend the students master some basic and essential knowledge, skills and abilities, together taking personal needs and interests into account, it is the time that education can be regarded as truly effective.
