------题目------
The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
'Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Painesville’s schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age.'
------正文------
The vice president of Nature's Way has not made a very persuasive argument for building their next new store in Plainsville in his or her memorandum. Maybe the vice president has not thoroughly investigated the market situation in Plainsville. His or her talking points, while seems suggestive of the possibility of making a profit, are not sufficient to warrant its inevitability, as there are holes in logic used to make the persuasion.(开头好,学习中ing)
First of all, the vice president made his or her conclusion based on the previous experience which has shown that their stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. But there is no evidence that the economics today are the same as that in the past times or that the consumption view of the local people remained alike or even that the result of cost/benefit analysis has not changed. For example, perhaps the people in Plainsville were quite rich in the past. They have enough money to buy health-related commodities.(这两句是否可以串句) By contrast, perhaps with the declining economics, the residents there earn too little to buy these things, although they still concern with leading healthy lives. The vice president offers no basis on which to compare the situation of today as opposed to that of before, leaving it open as to whether the previous experience is applicable.(驳斥具体,好!)
Another flaw in logic lies in the statement that the sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs as well as the fact that the local health club has more members than ever and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. The vice president does not state the number of sales of running shoes and exercise clothing, members of the club, and how big are the classes. It could be that these three are not popular at all in the past, and now the situation becomes only a little better, far from being able to reach the assumption that the residents of Plainsville are highly concerned with leading healthy lives, but appears to be the best performance in history. Citing this vague report without giving and needed information(这里不懂) does not advance the vice president's persuasion. If the vice president wants to evaluate the degree to which the residents concern with leading healthy lives, the detailed performance should be pointed out, not only a comparison with the past.(语言优美,值得学习,理由清晰,佩服!)
Furthermore, the vice president fails to take into account that these facts stated addresses only one specific part of healthy living, their fondness of sports. It is impossible to establish a general conclusion for their concerning of healthy lives from any number of cases in only one specific facet of living a healthy life--the specific varieties of living, the understanding of healthy life and other individual specific variables prohibit such a sweeping generalization. The situation might be more likely that, for these residents in Plainsville, young people constitute the majority of the total population. They are notoriously trendy, and regardless of what healthy life is, they may perceive that sports are fashionable whereas they don't care about food at all, which makes the persuasion unconvincing to us.
As it stands, the conclusion that Nature's way's next new store should be built in Plainsville is based on incomprehensive consideration and vague information. Without providing details to show that the people in Plainsville are indeed highly concerned with leading healthy lives and that the previous experience can be unquestionably applied to this situation, the argument fails to deliver on its premise.(结尾简明有力。学习中。!)这篇文章值得学习的地方有很多,比如语言,开头和结尾,你一定是个高手。) |
