14The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."
In this conclusion, the arguer recommends that Great Thumb Gardening Center can increase its profits by expending the variety of vegetable seeds. To support this suggestion the author cites a national survey indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. Additionally the argument point out that the gardening magazine Green Gardens has sold out Village News stand three months in a row. All the abovementioned is insufficient to convince the arguer’s conclusion.
First of all, the arguer commits a fallacy of misapplied generalization in assuming that the consumers interested in growing their own vegetables will results in the profits of selling seeds to the gardeners. In the conclusion the arguer cites the evidence that the consumers are mote interested in growing but this does not mean that the consumers will buy the seeds to grow . The author does not provide sufficient evidence to support the claim.
Secondly, the argument proposes that a national survey indicated that many consumers were satisfied with the vegetables available in supermarkets. This study could not illustrate that the consumers will grow their own vegetables instead of buying them from the markets. In all not everyone has the ability of growing the vegetable. Even if they have the skill of planting, it does not mean that they will gain too many to available the needs of the family. Additionally the survey is from the national it does not reaction the local information. Therefore the survey of the arguer provides does not convince that expanding the variety of vegetable seeds will increase the profits.
In the third place, the arguer cites that the gardening magazine Green Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row, in fact this statistics does not justified the magazines has the well selling in all stands. Thus it is no guarantee of the author’s conclusion.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To make the arguments more convince the arguer should provide more information concerning how to make more profits. For instance the Green Thumb Gardening Center could decrease the price of the seeds and teaching the consumers how to growing and so on.
