------题目------
A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.
------正文------
In this argument, the arguer claims that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia. At first glance, this argument is very specific and convincing. A careful examination of it, however, would reveal how groundless it is.

First of all, the mere fact that the volunteers slept longer and more soundly during the third week than they did during the previous two weeks is insufficient to conclude that these volunteers' insomnia has been alleviated, let alone been cured. As the arguer has said, the during the first two weeks, these volunteers felt more and more tired after their waking. Common sense tells us that tired people tend to have sound sleep. Therefore, it is natural that these volunteers slept longer and more soundly than they did in the previous two weeks, which has little relation with the lavender.

Besides, granted that the tire has no influence on these volunteers' sleep, no evidence shows that the new environment has little impact on them. As we know, it takes a relative long term for some people to be accustomed to a new environment, somebody even cannot adapt the new condition at all. In this sense, it is quite possible that these volunteers did not adapt the new environment and did not sleep well at first. After two weeks, they become familiar with the new surrounding and slept more soundly. Moreover, the monitor system may make these volunteers feel pressure, then impaired their sleep, with two week's familiarity, they are accustomed to this system and sleep soundly.

Finally, even if it is the lavender that made these volunteers sleep soundly, it is still too early too claim that lavender could heal all people's insomnia. For the beginning, alleviating is sharply different from curing. Maybe lavender has some effect to alleviate insomnia, it is far from enough to convince us that it can cure insomnia. Furthermore, granted that lavender has cured these volunteers' insomnia, only 30 volunteers are a relative small number to apply this result to the public. These 30 volunteers’ curing might just be an accident, thus their curing cannot be used as evidence to make a conclusion.

To sum up, this argument is not well reasoning and lack of credibility. To make this argument more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more evidence to prove that it the lavender other than other factors cures these volunteers' insomnia and these volunteers can represent all the people.

As we know, it takes a relative long term for some people to be accustomed to a new environment, somebody even cannot adapt 加 to the new condition at all. In this sense, it is quite possible that these volunteers did not adapt the new environment and did not sleep well at first. After two weeks, they become familiar with the new surrounding and slept more soundly. Moreover, the monitor system may make these volunteers feel pressure, then impaired their sleep,( not typical English)/  and  with two week's familiarity, they are accustomed to this system and sleep soundly.
May make them comfortless, thus impairing their sleep.

Finally, even if it is the lavender that made these volunteers sleep soundly, it is still too early too claim that lavender could heal all people's insomnia.
