Mistakes are inevitable, especially during the process of creativity, because people always face unknown world and in this situation no previous experience can guarantee correctness. However in many fields, such as computer software, physics, and philosophy, it is through mistakes that people attain progress.
In the realm of computer software, mistakes are indispensable for developing a successful piece of software. Programmers give the mistakes existing in software a new name--bugs. One famous software engineer points out that bugs are everywhere in your germinal editions and by discovering and correcting these bugs you can make your software strong enough to run well on every computer across the world. My personal experience also shows that it is the case. Last year I joined a team to develop an embedded operating system, which was designed to meet the needs from automobiles. In order to meet needs for high-efficiency we used some very creative data structures and algorithms. All these structures and algorithms were new and we had not used them before, so inevitably we made many mistakes in the process of development. By detecting and correcting bugs, we gradually revised our structures and algorithms so that we finally work out the most optimal ones and create a high-performance stable embedded operating system for automobiles. From this case, it is reasonable to conclude that the process of developing good computer software involves mistakes, or bugs.
In addition, the progress of physics, to some extent, depends on mistakes. When one carefully studies the history of physics, he or she can find that the history is almost a history of finding and correcting mistakes. For example, Galileo discovered the mistakes committed by Aristotle and Newton corrected them, which gave birth to new physics. Further, Newton's theory is considered a mistake when it applies to two extreme worlds—quantum world in an extremely tiny magnitude and cosmic world in an extremely large magnitude. By discovering and correcting such mistake, Bohr and Einstein finally propounded revolutionary theories--quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity, respectively, both of which are the foundation of modern physics. And a professor in the physics department in my university predicts that future advancements in physics are also based on finding and correcting previous mistakes. From the above examples, in some degree, one can ascribe the progress of physics to mistakes.
Finally, in the field of philosophy, great progress is also made through mistakes. Karl Marx, who is one the most significant philosophers in human history, for example, created his theory by inspecting the predecessors’ philosophies and correcting their mistakes. Marx learned Feuerbach’s materialism and Hegel’s dialectics and found that Feuerbach ignored human being’s positive role in praxis and that Hegel’s spiritualism lacked empirical evidence. Through correcting these two mistakes Marx finally advanced Marxism embracing materialistic dialectics, which is regarded as a milestone in philosophy. Thus, the advancement of philosophy has much to do with mistakes.
In sum, only through mistakes can there be progress. Most importantly, we should try to identify mistakess and correct them. In this way, we can generate innovations and motivate the progress of our field of study. |
