Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions.

The writer is correct in saying that facts are stubborn things that can not be altered by our wishes, our inclinations or the dictates of our passions so long as he means that we should respect the objectivity of facts. However, this argument does not hold water because it has some innate drawbacks which may render it unconvincing because it overlooks the power of human emotion when they are used to control human acts which may change facts.

Facts are something objective that can not be altered by the direct work mental activity of people, just as shown in some acrobatics or superstitious practices when people simply use their minds to bend a spoon. Or, a short man should accept the fact that he is short and it is hardly possible for him to change this fact even if he longs to be taller. A more important aspect of this argument involves our respect for the objectivity of facts. Namely, we have to realize the limitation of human capacity. Take the Leapforward Movement in the 1950's PRC as an example, after the Chinese people had conquered so many seemingly invincible difficulties, some people grew so conceited that they thought that people can do everything that they can imagine. So in this period we heard that the yield of crop in each acre exceeded ten thousands. Obviously these irresponsible boasts had gone beyond the limitation of nature, thus flying in the face of the objectivity of common sense.

The objectivity of facts does not necessarily mean that they are so stubborn as to be immune to any changes. Actually many facts can be altered through men's effort directed by their wishes, inclinations or the dictates of passion so long as we do it in accordance within the natural law. In China there is a very famous legend: an old man thought a hill stood in his way, so he tried to move the hill away simply by digging. When people saw this and laughed at him, he said: limited as my own power is, my offspring and their offspring will carry it on until it is done. At last his determination moved the God so much that they sent people to help him fulfilling the task. This reminds me of a famous epigram: nothing is impossible before a willing heart. They all point to the power of will when they are combined with human effort.

Blind credit in the objectivity of facts may cause problems, with fatalism in particular. Some people just mistake some wrong arrangements around them as facts that can not be altered. In the human history this is always used by the rulers to fool the ruled that being ruled is their fate and they have no choice but to accept this fact, even revolt can not change their fate. When a black was born in the Antebellum America, he took it for granted that blacks are inferior to the whites and it is their fate to serve the latter. These so-called facts had lead to the submission of thousands of people who never questioned the justice of it.

In conclusion, facts are stubborn and can not be altered by our wishes, inclination or the dictates of our passion when its objectivity and the limitation of human capacity are stressed. However, some facts can definitely be altered when these human emotions are resorted to control the human effort.
