Only through mistakes, can there be discovery or progress.
------正文------
As German poet Goethe once put it, man errs so long as he strives. In my point of view, the progresses and discoveries are truly through process of trial-and error. However, the title statement could not serve as the pretext of serious mistakes made by people.
To begin with, the progress of people's growing from childhood to adolescence and to college campus is just a process they make self-development through trial-and error. When we are children, we often gain knowledge through some mistakes even delinquency such as breaking plates and behaving at the risk of endangering our safety. When we enter into adolescence, we identify ourselves with particular groups often by awkward behavior and action in the other unsuitable groups or communities. And when we become college students, we would find our insufficient knowledge and become eager to learn more just by making mistakes in academic endeavor. Certainly, mistakes would still accompany us and stimulate our self-development in our future lives.
Moreover, the merits of mistakes not only limit in the youth, but also could find in adult world. Only through mistakes, could academic fields make achievements and gain progress. In fact, the history of academic world is just a process of trial-and-error. Take Thomas Edison as example. His invention of light bulb was not a flash of mind of genius, but rather was a process of making thousands experiments and assimilating experience through mistakes. He even knew 1800 unsuccessful materials to make the tiny filament in the bulb. As we could perceive, mistakes really could expose the defects and insufficiencies of our theories and knowledge that enable our further efforts to solve them.
Furthermore, in moral and political world, the merits of mistakes are also obvious. Human being is not intrinsically perfect, nor their ideas and political systems, such as social attitudes and laws. Only through making mistakes and through people's dissentient and resistance, the society and government could really realize their insufficiencies. Without widely racial discrimination and its negative impacts in nineteenth century, the values of human rights and equality might not be considered as precious as today in American society. Similarly, only through criticizing of the unfairness and irrelevance of current law system, can we discover the necessity of further amelioration and development and the overall political situation could be raised.
However, the title statement should not be presented as excuse for some serious mistakes and delinquency made by our government authorities as well as the society, since the expense of these mistakes are too high to take. Still remember the accident of nuclear power station in Three Mile Island. It not only radiate harmful materials to local residences, but also to the environment that make the nature world take more than decay to mitigate its influence. Consider the spaceship launch. If the mission fails, what great cost it would take! Moreover, war and conflicts often derives from the governments wrongly policy. Can we just wait for our leaders to gain progress through their mistakes while the mass are threatened to lose their homes even lives? Therefore, at any time, we should not take mistake for granted, though it may lead us to discoveries and progress.
To sum up, I strongly agree that mistakes could bring positive influence to our society. However, in term of those serious mistakes, which could take people's general interests at stake, we should try every effort to prevent them from happening. |
