The speaker claims that only through mistakes cam there be discovery or progress. I think it's somewhat reasonable, yet final decision depends on a case-by-case analysis for several situations.

To begin with, we might inevitable to commit mistakes, however, we can learn and get experience from these mistakes. We were not born to be a sophisticated scientist or a non-mistaken person. In other words, we are inevitable to commit mistakes and more important that we can gain a lecture from mistakes. As a child learns how to walk, he/she may fall and break his/her legs at the first try, then at his/her second try ,still might fail again, perhaps only at the one hundred attempt, he/she could master walking. Do the formal 99 failures meaningless? I think we should to say not. During the progress of learning and the progress of making mistakes, the child can learn more. Perhaps his/her first time failure due to misunderstanding how to control balance and on the second time he/she understands it but he/she fails to use the suitable strength and so on. The real function of mistakes is letting him/her to know where he/she might be wrong and knowing this can greatly help him to remedy the mistake and have progress. What’s more, perhaps though this process of making mistakes he/she also can take potential advantages for learning other skills.

In addition, others' mistakes can also contribute to our exploration and success. As Newton said (and I paraphrase):"I can see further than others it is because I have stand on the shoulders of giants". Our proceders stepped before us to discovery the curious and unknown world, which may imply that they may confront and beat by some of problems before us, thus we also can learn
from their mistakes and simplely avoid to commit it again or study them and get useful information from them. Thus cleverly utilizing others’ mistakes can save our time and energy as well as help our
further exploration and discovery.   

Admittedly, though other ways we also can get access to discovery and progress. In scientific realm, the focus and the economic support of the government and the whole society can greatly impulse the development and progress of science and technology. As we know high-tech innovations and important discoveries has grown up so fast in these years is largely due to people’s awareness of the
critical role of scientific study .Then more money, more resource and more people has been put in it, as a result taking all of these advantages we can have such a prosperous society as we see today. Moreover some important discoveries or progress also cause by accidence. Such scientific accidence is common to see in chemic realm, such as the discovery of c60,c70 and some other rare elements. Thereby mistakes are not the only way lead to discoveries and progress in scientific realm.   

In sum, mistakes, to some extent, are contribute to discoveries and progress bases on what I analysis above. However we can not arbitrary to claim that only though mistakes can we get access to discoveries and progress considering other possibilities.
