Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

Many people assert that practicality is now our great idol and anything that is not obviously practical is of little use. On some aspect, I agree with the statement, however, in my opinion, many things that seem not practical are still playing an essential role.

Admittedly, in modern world, both individuals and groups consider practicality as their final goals in the processes of their struggling. Furthermore, we should make great effort for the achievement of our goals. As we have used to do, we should set a terminal aim whatever we do, which can drive us to achieve our goals. If we consider nothing about why we are working, our jobs seem too meaningless. At present, we can set examples from every field. Then, take my research field, chemical engineering, which mainly does research on the separation of mixture using the tower of distillation, as an example. My program, which is about improving the efficiency of the tower of distillation, is given by the Air Separation Company of China and what I should do is certainly on the purpose of creating more benefits for the company.

However, practicality has been over emphasized and people nearly lose their own direction in order to pursue more practical benefits. People now set out from benefits. Those that can gain profit are worth to do, but those that are worthless will draw less attention. Thus, many important things that can touch the hearts of human beings have been neglected To gain their material benefits, a great deal of people cheat their parents, wives and friends. For example, some people gamble for more money and when they are lost, they borrow money from those no matter whom they can. Finally, tragedies always happen: not only the money cannot win back, but also can the gambler live calmly. Therefore, sometimes money is not as good as what people think of.

Actually, many mental behaviors that cannot be traded such as love, loyalty, friendship and so on, are more important than those material profits. It is these things that differentiate human beings greatly from animals. What's more, it is helpful for people to make their minds full of emotion, which can motivate people to go ahead when they are tired of consistently working. Take myself for example. Retrospect to the period when I was preparing for the exam of the entrance to graduate schools, I was indeed too tired to insist about 3 weeks before the exam. Then, my mother's courage supported me to continue to achieve the process. I was so glad to say that half of my final success was due to the courage of my great mother.

To sum up, practicality is now our aim no matter in works or study, however, many emotions still attach great importance.
