This argument is not cogent to conclude that the prediction of the consultants about the West Eggs landfill is false. The consultants predicted that the landfill which is used for garbage disposal would be completely filled within five years. The arguer takes recycling of aluminum and paper and residents strong commitment to recycling as examples to support the conclusion. But the argument is based on several unwarranted assumptions, and the evidences are not insufficient to support the conclusion.

First of all, the result of the survey is problematic. The arguer makes a conclusion hastily with the result of the survey. Further, the arguer fails to consider that the residents who are interested in recycling were more likely than others to answer and return the questionnaires. The part of residents cannot represent all the opinions of residents in West Egg. It is said that the survey excludes the residents who are not willing to do recycling in the future. In addition, the number of residents who have attended the survey has not been told. Maybe the sample is too small and the result may narrow down and locate the actual cause of the problem. Furthermore, there are still many kinds of garbage should be considered. The arguer simply equates aluminum and paper with all the garbage, which is unwarranted. Aluminum and paper are only two kinds of garbage. There are many other garbage have to consider. For example, the plastics which is called white pollution cannot be recycled. The residents in West Egg might produce many plastics garbage, but the arguer has not mentioned this kind of garbage.

Secondly, the argument is based on the assumption that the consultants had overlooked the increasing of the recycling within the five years. The arguer provides no evidence to demonstrate that the consultants have not considered the recycling. The consultants who are the experts on the garbage disposal have many experiences on dealing with this garbage problem, they consider many aspects of the existing problems and the problems might happen in the future.

Thirdly, many other factors might affect the landfill. The increasing of population would shorten the using time of the landfill. The more people, the more garbage will be produced. Perhaps the industries of West Egg are developing very fast. The prediction is made two years ago, it is not certainly that the situations are still the same at present.

In sum, the arguer makes a hasty conclusion. To be a better argument, the arguer should solve the problems that mentioned above, and provide evidence to prove that the strong commitment to recycling of the residents will last long. Moreover, many details of the recycling should be taken into account.

No.1  Argument 11 ,自己的水平还是不怎么样!请大家给点意见!3。30考
11。
The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of West Egg.
'Two years ago, our consultants predicted that West Egg's landfill, which is used for garbage disposal, would be completely filled within five years. During the past two years, however, town residents have been recycling twice as much aluminum and paper as they did in previous years. Next month the amount of material recycled should further increase, since charges for garbage pickup will double. Furthermore, over ninety percent of the respondents to a recent survey said that they would do more recycling in the future. Because of our residents' strong commitment to recycling, the available space in our landfill should last for considerably longer than predicted.'
