Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Scandals are something of paradox in our society. Some critics severely accuse them of violating individual's privacy and degrading public's morality, while others strongly favor them by pointing out that there is an apparent effect of scandals in focusing our attention on problems which is beyond the capacity of any speaker or reformer. Since they both only reveal one aspect of the reality, both positive and negative factors call for a subtle balance between these two opinions.

To begin with, certainly no one can argue that scandals can attract people's eyes as soon as they were born out. To the extent that curiosity is one of the human nature. Everyone in this world is more or less interested in something new and something different. Scandals are happened quite often when someone of at least some celebrity is done something that the people never thought of. At a result, the people are willing to know why and how he or she did so. In this way, Scandals satisfy the public's curiosity and thus focus their attention on these problems involved in the scandals. While at the standpoint of a speaker or reformer, the only way that they can call our attention is by their lectures, but as a proverb goes "facts is more than speaking", most people will feel dull to listen to their speaking that there will be little difference made by them. In this sense, Scandals can be more effective than speakers and reformers.

Furthermore, numerous examples in history indicate that exposing a scandal often contributes to a social effort to solve the relevant problem. The scandals view the world in gloomy aspect specially. Many serious social problems are often exposed by the scandals. As one example, a famous professor in Peking University was accused of plagiarism on one of his academic dissertation recently, although in the past there had been a few people spoken out this problem of academic corruption in China, very little attention was directed towards this problem. Then when this massive scandal broke out, the public are aware the severity of such a problem, causing it to be addressed to the highest level. The scandal is a useful way for the public to pay their attention to the relevant problems with one scandal so that maybe only one scandal can make aeries of social problem is paid enough attention to. To solve a problem, the first we must do is to discover it and pay enough attention to it when it just arouse. Scandals give us the chance to do so. In this aspect, scandals make a good effort for solving the social problems.

Without a doubt, there are many negatives of scandals. For one thing, through a scandal, the public will overemphasize the defect of a person that they will see less of their merits. As a case in point, the media's uncovering of the former US President Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky will most likely overshadow the entire eight years of his administration, although on the whole he is a competent president, by to many people, the deep impression of Clinton is his scandal. Another distinct possibility is that a scandal might be something fake, something never happened, reporters are forced by the competition to pry ever deepen to a celebrity in order to sell more newspapers or entice more viewers to watch a television program. Sometimes, when nothing could be the news, they will compile a story on their own. The inexistent love affair between Mingxia Wu and Tian Lian, two golden medal owners of the Athens Olympic game, was a good case in pointed. There is no doubt that there are a large number of who have been hurt in one way or another by scandals.

In general, scandals can be useful to societies as they can help people to solve certain kinds of problems. However, once a scandal is disclosed, a determination should be made about its veracity, and one should look at it in a balanced insight.

第2段第3行Scandals are happened 那个are好象有点多余。

"But man is not made for defeat," he said. "A man can be destroyed but not
defeated."
