感觉有些例子用的有点离题,不确定.

Issue138 .Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

It is well-known that mistakes play a beneficial role in guiding our actions in life and science, no wonder there is an old saying--"to err is human". However, the conception that only through mistakes can lead us to discovery or progress is somewhat overstated and misleading. It may be even, if possible, used to be an excuse for a blunder which can actually be avoidable.

In the field of personal life, human being has to learn from countless experience, accompanying with a myriad of mistakes. Skinner, one of the representatives of Behaviorism provided a logical conclusion of his famous experiment with rats using “Skinner Box”, in which rats learned how to get the food after a multitude of mistakes. Skinner then put the theory to human beings, who also obtain knowledge from the empirical experience. In another profile, this experiment illustrates the fact that mistakes contribute significantly to the aggregation of new knowledge in that they actually adversely reinforce the positive behavior. Common sense also tells us mistakes serves to facilitate our progress during each gradation. For example, we firstly learn to walk on foot by ourselves. It is natural to fall down and stand up till we finally learned how to walk after countless mistakes. Also, it is the same of educational field. Is there ever any student who has never made mistakes in his or her homework? The answer is obvious. From elementary school to university, we kept making mistakes, while on the contrary achieved progress one after another with the help of instructors. Therefore, it is very clear that only through mistakes can we distinguish the right and improve ourselves ultimately.

In the field of science, making mistakes usually means getting one step closer to success for one mistake implies excluding one more failure thus get closer to the truth. There would be few people who think Brother Carter were so fortunate that they just make one experiment to invent the plane successfully? It is said that they tried thousands of times before they attained the final success. It is same to other respects, such as astronomic exploration. We will never forget the catastrophic disaster happened to space shuttle Columbia. Those who sacrificed themselves contribute significantly to the development of astronomic study. Experts on the research of outer-space learned valuable lessons from this disaster, thus the following scientists will avoid making the same mistakes. In this sense, a further progress has been achieved.

As discussed above, mistakes can bring about certain favorable effects. It is, however, not the solely key element for progress or discovery. Mrs. Courier, for instance, discovered the new element—radium by accident rather by mistakes. To further explore the fundamental reason leading to her discovery; it is her sincerely devoted spirit to science and her acute observational capability which finally lead to her success. This illustrates well that, aside from mistakes, other factors determining the progress are dispensable.

In the modern society with more and more understanding of making mistakes, people were encouraged to face any potential failure and thus were told making mistakes are natural to achieve improvement. However, the above statement overstates the significance of mistakes. After all, one would not attain accomplishment unless one correct it, otherwise, mistakes will necessarily bring about oppression and failure instead.
