------题目------
The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
'An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism.'
------正文------
In the argument, the author recommends the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism based on the result of a study and(the ) fact that colds being the most frequent reason for absences from school and work. However, a careful scrutiny would reveal several unproven assumptions in the argument, as discussed below.(开头好)
To begin with, the reliability and the generalizability of the study result(这句有语病吧?应该是the result of the study) is open to doubt. The argument fails to provide any information concerning the details of the study. Were the study respondents randomly sampled? Or was the number of the study respondents large enough to represent the majority people in East Meria? In addition, the author does not mention the conductor of the study. Was the conductor authoritative enough to make its study convincing? Accordingly, answers to these questions have tight connection with reliability and generalizability of the study.(这一段的论证非常出色!学习中…………)
Even if we acknowledge the reliability and the generalizability of the study, the argument remains doubtful. The fact that people visit the doctor less for the treatment of colds is not sufficient enough to conclude their less possibility of suffering from colds. Perhaps people there do not incline to see doctors for colds and in most cases they would like to have these minor illness cured by themselves. It is entirely possible that(only) when encountered with a bad cold (would) they are(are 是多余的吧?你认为呢?) probably to(去掉to ) go to see a doctor. Even conceding people are less likely to get colds in East Meria, the author still makes a fallacy. The author assumes(that ) the correlation between the consumption of a substantial amount of fish and less possibility of suffering from colds means that the former is the cause of the latter. However, this is not necessary the case at all. No evidence is given to show that consumption of a variety of fish could lead to immune from colds. It is highly possible that the distinct way(我认为这里的distinct way of life 应该更具体化一点) of life of people in East Meria that is the sole reason for their less possibility to get colds. Or it is very likely that people there tend to have a distinct kind of diet that is much beneficial to people's immune system to get less suffer from colds.(这段的论证也不错,但是有些地方不是很具体。)
(是不是加上even会好一点?)Assuming a large consumption of fish could effectively prevent colds, the author's assertion that Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, could be used as a good way to avoid colds. Yet it is entirely possible that another substance contained in fish is the uniquely thing to avoid colds other than Ichthaid. Therefore, daily use of Ichthaid is of no use for the purpose of preventing colds.(excellent.)
Finally, another point the author stresses is that Ichthaid's effective prevention of colds would necessarily lower absenteeism. Unfortunately, this is not necessary the case at all. Granted that Ichthaid is effective, no specific information is given concerning its side-effects. Perhaps it has got egregious side-effects and people using it to preventing colds might probably be suffered from other more severe diseases, which undoubtedly lead to more absenteeism.(这一点我没想到,学习……)
The argument, though logic and rational at the first glance, has several flaws as it stands. To make the argument more convincing, the author should provide more specific concerning Ichthaid's detailed effect of less possibility of getting colds.(结尾有待改进,是时间关系吗?) |
