The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas--not to prepare them for a specific job.


Through the long history education have experience a lot, from started by the church, later molded by the capitalism into their image, till now in the 21st century a highly advanced world, but the general task defining of the primary purpose of education is as old as the idea of what kind of person should be cultivated by education. Should the role of education to serve the needs of society? If so, then what are needed by society? Obviously the high technology-driven society where jobs are clearly divided into many fields in which specific skill is needed demands more and more skillful people to realize the enduring propensity of the current. Therefore they hope that the education system can provide them such kinds of people the more the better so that they can have a wide choice to select the elites to work for them. Moreover a tendency in the society guides the students to pursue the hot vacations; as a result, numerous students enthusiastically squeeze to learn these skills in the area such as law, medical system, computer engineering and management as well. Thus they hope education can improve them skills to much fitter the demand in the job market. These phenomena push the education system entrapped a mesh that whether education should prepare students for a specific job as the society along with the students desired. The thing that one can give another what he or she needs seems match well. However it is not the level of this sensation that dictates whether or not in what direction something should be oriented, nor whether or not the one in the giving side just give is enough.

The reality is that the industrial society actually have formed a habit to maximum its profit for economic concern. Consequently, it do not consider too much of the other aspects of society, such as, morality, a value system, a standard to follow and so forth. For example, in recent years, the environment pollution is still a big problem. I concede that the cause can trace back to the very beginning when people have no awareness about such an affair, but now such affairs still exist. Why? Only having a skill without a moral standard to regulate a skill man to avoid doing bad to the society is dangerous and harmful to the whole human beings and the already thriving society, that is, solely skill is not enough. In short, education should have its belief not just follow the near-slighted prevailed concern of current society.
  
In fact, the education have the obligation to prepare students not only a skillful individuals but most importantly to instill in them a value system, a standard, a set of ideas, which help them develop into a full man that can contribute to build a better place for all the human beings. It is a material world, but after distinguishing our human beings from the animal society, we eventually live life styles which definitely beyond just survive. For example, as an individual, besides work, he or she is still in the need of sparing time to do some charity for groups of people living under the average level of society. Moreover, after graduation, students will face more things except for work. They have to be respectful and tolerant to each other to reach a fluent cooperation. Further, it is inevitable that they will build their own family, during the process of which the skill can not help them but the moral and personally perspective can.

Finally, I concede that skill is useful for one to make contribution to the prosperity of society, and one need to depend their skill to earn a living in the competitive world. However, the purpose should not just aim to prepare the students for a job, that is, it has more essential thing to do help people to break the limitation of themselves to achieve more than material and make a better society.
