From the beginning of human, we have experienced a variety of discoveries and progress. I partially agree with the statement that mistakes help to make discoveries and progress because through them we know what is workable and what is impossible. And fearing making mistakes usually impedes the inventions and discoveries. In addition, mistakes are not the only way to discover.

First of all, many discoveries are ascribed to mistakes. According to a saying, failure is the mother of success, that is to say successful progress often stems from mistakes. As we all know, Edison, a famous inventor, found out the best metal material to produce lamps after trying hundreds of other metals. Just the primary amounts of failures that proved these metals are not suitable for lamps bring about the successful choice. Another typical example is the discovery of 606, a kind of drug. It is named 606 because the discoverer found it in the 605th experiment after 605 failures. Through the initial failure, Edison and the discoverer of 606 knew that the primary choice is not workable for their goal. Therefore, in many conditions, mistakes contribute a lot to discoveries in the realm of science..

Furthermore, fearing making mistakes often keep us out of improvement and discoveries. Discoveries are accompanied with exploration and assumption. At first, discoverers usually come up with a theory according to their knowledge and experience, but they did not assure that it is a truth. Thus, we should permit mistakes but not fear it. Keeping endurance to mistake out of our society, the rate of development possibly slows down and we perhaps miss some desirable discoveries. Assuming that Mr. Deng Xiaoping, a chairman of China, had not advanced the policy of reform and open in that he was afraid of failure, China would not develop rapidly and reach current achievement to be one of powerful countries in the competitive international world. In another word, it is brave attempt not worrying about making mistakes that attributes to economical development.  

I concede mistakes are indispensable in the course of discovering and making progress, but it they are not the only way. In the history of discovery, many successful persons achieve their accomplishment due to their talent, persistence, diligence, imagination and so forth. Without those elements, none success is impossible be reached.

To sum up, to some extent, mistakes contribute a lot to make discoveries and progress because they show us what is not workable. Be afraid of mistakes leads to impeding discoveries development, thus mistakes are desirable. However, it is unfair to outlook other factors leading to new discoveries. The better way is learning from mistakes and trying to avoid the similar mistakes.
