In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

I partially agree with the statement above. It is necessary for faculty in some fields to spend time working outside the academic world, while it is not the case with faculty in some other fields. This depends on the property the very subject has.

To begin with, courses which are pragmatic or closely related to the future professions of students need their faculty to communicate with the outer world. These courses are meant to develop the ability of students to work in these professions; therefore if the teachers merely work in the academic sphere, they cannot offer the students with the knowledge of new technology or potential trend in these vocations. Take the course of computer science for example, the IT industry is developing rapidly from time to time, if the teachers do not get in touch with the outer world, the students may only know how to operate the "fossil computer" under the teachers' introduction. In short, getting in touch with the profession world is not only beneficial but also necessary for the teachers in pragmatic courses.

However, faculty in some fundamental courses called "pure science" which emphasis on theory knowledge like mathematics and physics do not need to spend time working outside the academic world. In fact, it is impossible for them to communicate with profession world, for that these courses can be applied in nearly all aspect of the society. Take mathematics for example, it is the base of nearly all the scientific field, and the teachers in this field would be confused in finding a counterpart outside the academic world. Some say that the teacher can choose one from these professions, however, for a specific application of mathematic in professions, there is other pragmatic courses in the universities to teach relevant knowledge. Consequently, there is not feasible for faculty in "pure science" to work outside the academic world.

Furthermore, in some courses used to broaden the sight of students rather than a professional course, communicate with professional world is unnecessary. Like history or philosophy for students in engineering, teaching these courses is a way to develop the abilities of thinking insightfully, getting in touch with some knowledge, or entertaining oneself in his leisure time. Unless the course was taught to professional students working on these courses, there is no need for the faculty to spend time working outside the academic world.

To sum up, for some pragmatic courses, it is necessary for the faculty to spend time working in professions relevant to the courses they teach, while in some other courses, it is neither necessary nor feasible for their faculty to work outside the academic world.
