In recent years, human beings have not only achieved great improvements in most of the technological fields but also caused numerous social problems through the process of civilization. Some of these problems would make it impossible for us to live in this world were it not to be solved as soon as possible. But the suggestion to build a global university to help solve the world’s most persistent social problems would seems to be a rather shallow statement as it ignores the viability of such an university.

First of all, the above statement is much too abroad. “All nations” covers every country all over the world. There are countries that simply have no money for supporting the development of a global university as they are merely subsistent countries that even lack adequate funding to properly feed their own population. Impoverished as they are, these countries have not even been able to develop their own systematic educational system, let alone provide support for a global university. There are countries that lack the desire to solve the world’s mutual social problems, preferring to make their effect on their own problems since they think that the global social problems do not represent their own matter. A possible discrepancy between the general situation as the entire world and their local situation may prevent them from being benefited by the solution offered by the university. To broadly state that all nations should involved in such an action is to assume that all the nation have the ability as well as the desire to build a global university. What about some poor African countries? Do they have enough money and researchers?

Another problem with this suggestion is that it overlooks the existing discrepancy between countries and overestimates the spirit of tolerance and collaboration possessed by human beings. With the increasing globalization of telecommunications and the rising interdependency of the economies of the various countries of the world, all human activities are indeed intertwined into an inseparable bundle that every country must cooperate in one way or another with the other countries in order to participate in the international affairs for its better development. However, the disparity of the stage to which a particular country has developed and the general beliefs of a nation prohibits the collaboration of all human beings from all over the world. Can you imagine that certain countries with the clashes between centuries-old cultures and religions, such as that of West countries and Islamic extremists, could act toward a common goal hand in hand? Does it exist the possibility that Harvard will build a cooperative-lab with a poor small college in Afghanistan? It would be difficult to argue that humankind of today have the capability and the tolerance to make great effects to achieve a mutual purpose when consider these possible obstacles.

As for methods solving the world’s most persistent social problems, perhaps a regional university built by countries nearby with the similar culture and economic development would be a better alternative. This solution might be applicable since there seems to be fewer handicaps in put it into practice. The benefit of building a mutual university owned by several countries is obvious—it can provide people from these nations a platform in which they share their resources and faculties. One single country may have some single perspective for the solution of a certain social problem, while by compared with many solutions we can choose a better even best one for solving that problem. Everyone country has his own advantage in some aspects, but together we can make a perfect university that is good at almost every fields of studies. In this matter, this university will improve the social situations of this regional areas.

It seems impossible that a global university owned by all human beings can be built. But the general social problems should be tried to solve by countries. To build a regional university seems to be a better choice.
