Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study ;)
The speaker says that "Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. 。They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively." It quite accord to the two main goals of education.
The first aim of education is helping students to learn as many acknowledges as possible. Teachers are no doubt have more acknowledges in a certain field that he or she is teaching. But teachers themselves are human beings and not perfect, there must be something they don't know or know just a little about it .So as a student, in order to get the correct answer to certain questions or clearly understand what was taught by the teacher, we need to hold a certain skepticism which will help us to clarify correct answers, and correct mistakes or misunderstandings.
Skepticism is a powerful tool for our study. When I was a little shy girl in an element school, my mathematical teacher taught us that the year 2000 is the beginning of 21st century, whereas my memory was that it's the end of 20th century, as what was told by my mother. At that time I was only 9 years old, I didn’t know whether my teacher or my mother is right. At first ,I'm afraid of asking teacher to ensure that, causing I thought if I asked that question, especially when our teacher was wrong, she would be very embarrass, and no doubt that she would never love me again. However when I finally asked that question cravenly, the teacher was very happy to be questioned, she accepted that she had made a big mistake and praised me in front of all students in our class. From that day on, I began to study well hart to clarify everything she taught; maybe I just wanted to find out another mistake to draw the teacher’s attention. Although it didn't happen again, I began to get higher grades and was praised by all of my teachers.
The other aim of education is aiding students to gain the ability to survive in the more and more complex and confusing world. With the development of technology and communication, we can get whelming information in such a quick way via newspaper, TV, radio and internet. Sometimes we are confused and disoriented by infinite reports concerning the same subject or topic, but in different aversions. Which report is true? How did the thing happen in reality? At that very moment, we need the ability of skepticism to make our own decision or solution. If we haven’t gain the capability in schools and got used to just receive information without thinking and reasoning, it is difficult to recall them back again.
So, in my point of view, students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study, or what we learned is just fragments of the whole mount of acknowledge, and certainly the education is a failure. |
