------题目------
When Ida McAllister ran for mayor of Lake City four years ago, she failed to win even 30 percent of the vote. But since then, McAllister has made public her commitment to environmental causes. She would be wise, therefore, to announce her intention to close all Lake City parks to automobile traffic, thus following the example of the former mayor of Plainsville, Alecia Yu . On the recommendation of a small group of concerned citizens, Mayor Yu prohibited automobile traffic in all Plainsville parks, and therefore was credited with solving the pollution problem and improving the quality of life in Plainsville. This action would have great appeal to the citizens of Lake City, most of whom participate in the community's recycling program, and would guarantee McAllister's success in her current quest to be Lake City's new mayor.
------正文------
The argument claims that McAllister would win the next City's new mayor's election through adopting a policy to announce her intention to close all Lake City parks to automobile traffic. To substantiate the conclusion, the author cites that a former mayor had win the election by a similar way, and most of local people participate in recycling program. However, making a carefully scrutiny, I found the argument is suffering from several critical flaws and unconvincing as it stands.
To begin with, the author fails to provide strong evidence that closing parks to automobile traffic could help to deal with pollution problem. Lacking such evidence, it is entirely possible that the total number of automobile will not decrease, or even increase, then the pollution caused by automobiles would be even worse. In this case, the conclusion of argument is dubious at best.
Next, another problem with the argument is the false analogue between the former major's success and the next mayor election. Concede that the success of former major is attributable to his environmental protection policy , there is no evidence to prove that McAllister would win in a similar way. The environment itself, attitude of local people, and economic situation, each of which would impact on the consequence of policy, might all changed during these years, so it is very likely that adopting the policy will have little impact on election. Therefore, the conclusion of argument is serious undermined.
Then , participation in recycling program do not guarantee that most local people are also very care about pollution problem. Although participation in recycling program is an indication of strong awareness of environmental protection, but it in itself can not prove the latter. It is entire possible that local people recycle materials for saving money or other purposes. Without consider and rule out these possibilities, the author can not convince me that local people are very care about pollution problem.
Finally, the author fails to take other possible factors, which can contribute to election success, into account. Common sense tells us, many factors could impact on consequence of election. For instance, the financial support of one candidate, the condition of other competitors, and local political values all can influence the result. The author fails to provide such information and consider these fators, therefore, the conclusion of argument is premature at best.
In conclusion, the argument is unconvincing as it stands. To substantiate it ,the author should prove that proposed policy could help to protect environment in deed, provide information about the attitude of local people toward pollution. Other factors which could influence election also should be considered. |
