e186: 394 words 40 minutes April 1, 2005 from 11:15 to
Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.
In this pragmatic society, practicality has come to be one of the common words buzzwords?? in our day-to-day life. Then should we first ask whether what we do is whether practical or not?(这两个whether 用得意思都有点混乱 了) As far as I am concerned, practical needs should be first served, yet, we should not ignore the things which might be not practical at a moment.
30Admittedly, it is obviously true to serve the practical needs in the first place. Nowdays Nowadays, though after development of millions of years, there are still hunger, and corruption, and women discrimination, ancient problems with a long history. Worse more, new pressing problems arise in our modern world--the environment pollution, for instance, including the air pollution, the water pollution, the soil pollution and etc. Any nation should deal with these pressing problems if it hopes to survive for a longer time. For example, it is crucial to build luxary luxury luxury edifice for entertainment while multitude people are striving to make their stamoch stomach full. Efforts and resources should spared first to resolve the practical problem of the starving people. If a nation dares怎么用这个词?! to ignore such pressing problems but to do something not practical, it will surely result in disaster.
18Yet, emphasis on the practical matters does notmean we may blindly ignore all things that are not practical this moment. This is especially true in a peaceful country with few poor people for the government when it comes to decide whether certain scientific research should be supported. Take the medical study for example, it is ridiculous to invest in human cloning, which is against ethics as well as against morals, yet, should we completely deny the study of cloning of stem cell? Some government officials might refuse such studies bluntly since stem cell study is far from practicability for disease curing at this time of day. Yet, the value of devotion to stem cell study will not come into practice until enough pre-researches. If all studies in stem cell are inhibited, how could a patient to replace his or her organ of himself or herself, which comes from the stem cell?
Then, in our peace-dominant time, decision makers, especially the government officials should make a careful consideration on such subjects, the value of which seemes seems not practical today but may be valuable tomorrow.
To sum up, we should first and foremost spare no efforts in fighting against practical problems, such as hunger, unemployment, etc. On the other hand, we had better cast our sides forward, be careful in order not to neglect the development of such issues, not practical at this moment, thus probably bringing far-reaching indications.
