Confronting with so many facts around us, one have to admit that only learning facts is of little help; on the other hand, it is also unrealistic to memorize the facts only after the understanding the ideas, trends and concepts.

To begin with, learning only facts contributes little to the accumulation of one's knowledge. In any scientific spheres, the concepts are the foundation. Without these concepts, few of us can explain the facts specifically since many facts are covered by superficies, which may mask the essence of the concepts. It is entirely possible for a common people to memorize the element periodical chart, which is the basement of the chemistry, by reciting it as many times as possible for a few days. But without rudimentary concepts and ideas in chemistry one cannot catch the exact meaning of "period" but may improve the ability of memory, in that the most famous chart over the world is based on the number of the atoms in each element. And with this elementary knowledge on chemistry, one will be able to restate the sequence of the elements in this chart without reciting practices. Thus, the memory of the facts alone won’t benefit us a lot.

Additionally, the ideas, trends and concepts help learn the new facts. As there are so many facts in the knowledge, accumulated for thousands of years, it is unimaginable that one can memorize all the facts, needless to say the dullness of this activity. But the practicality of the study of the concepts and ideas is undeniable as well. The well-known economist, Paul Samuelson, the writer of one of the most popular economic books, Economics, once states in his works that what he has written in his books most are the fundamental concepts in this sphere in that the social trends advance so fast that some old facts might diversify and some new facts might come out; but with these fundamental concepts, it won’t be difficult to catch up the pace of the movement. In short, in learning the facts the concepts and ideas are needed, and maybe that is the explanation to the generality covering on the first chapter of each subject books.

However, not all the facts can be explained by the concepts or ideas because our knowledge stems from the surroundings which have existed long before the birth of our human beings. In this case, it is impossible and unrealistic to learn all the facts via concepts, ideas and trends. The cause of dreams happening during sleeping is still covered so that people hold the fact in imagination; the explosion of the universe is hypothesized and we only learn the fact that our universe is expanding; even the research of our human being's brain is also in an unknown world on the mere fact that it has two half spheres. Thus, sometimes students should only memorize the facts without any other tools, hoping that the technology in the future may instruct them.

In sum, the learning activity is a complex process. After all, everyone wants to understand our world effectively and profoundly. Without concepts, we cannot explain the facts; without the facts, our knowledge is useless. But both of them need us to form our own thoughts to face the rapid pace of the social changes.
