In this summary, the author claims that less and less residents in Mentia will suffer headache because food companies find a new use of salicylates, which is that putting salicylates in the food as a flavor. To support this summary, the author cites the following facts: salicylates and aspirin are in the same chemical family; moreover, a survey reports that a decline number of people suffered headache when salicylates were put as preservatives. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the summary.

First of all, even if salicylates are members of the same chemical family and aspirin, without convinced proof, which can persuade me that salicylates can cure headache, I can not believe that they have the same use--as medicines used to treat headache. Perhaps aspirin can cure headache, but salicylates can not without other crucial assistances. To persuade me, the author should provide more evidence.

Secondly, even assuming that salicylates can be used to cure headache, the author fails to provide assurances that the survey on which the argument depends is statistically reliable. Lacking information about the number of people surveyed and the number of respondents, it is impossible to assess the validity of the results. For instance, the conclusion that less suffer headache after salicylates were put in food as preservatives than that before would be highly suspected if only a little people responded. Perhaps, they became healthy because of taking other medicines. Besides, were the respondents representative of all the residents? Maybe many people who have a worse condition did not be chosen randomly. Without such evidence, the author can not draw any firm conclusion based on the survey.

Thirdly, the argument also assumes unfairly that there will be a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by average citizens when sativylates are used as a new flavor. Maybe only a little people like this new flavor and buy these products, meanwhile, more and more people pursue other products without salicylates. Thus, the author can not make the conclusion of the average citizen. Without the explanation who will buy these new products and how many people will buy, the author can not make and sound recommendation.

In sum, the summary relies on certain doubtful assumptions that render it unconvincing as it stands. To persuade me that salicylates can cure more and more people who suffered headache when they put in food as new flavor, the author would need to provide clear evidence including that saplicylates have the use to cure headache; when they are used as preservatives, the survey are fairly and respondents are representative of all the citizens; how many people and what kind of people will buy these new products with salicylates used as a new flavor.
