Issue36 The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.

Public judgment of individuals' greatness depends on a twofold condition :1 the objective attribute of their contributions, whether short-termed and practical, basing on the material level or far-shighted and spiritual;2 the subjective level on whether the judgment has to go beyond the cognition limitation of public. Therefore I can not agree with the speaker's assertion since it is a issue that calls for case by case study.

On one hand, considering of the business realm, applied technology realm including invention and research, and some other field, the greatness can meet society's short-term demand or can be applied to material development. The leaders of world top 500 on Forbus can serve as comspicious example. They exert their inteligence, leadership and personal capability to maxmize profit on economic and social value. Another example on applied science of IT, we have experienced the process from Dos system to Windows 586 during 20 years. With life and work facilitated by the greatness, there is no reason for contemporaries waiting to leave the judgment to our descentants.

On the other hand, as for some other realms, for example: pure science research, arts, and some significant history reform, our contemporaries have no ability to give any judgment which may even have misled by our limitation and wrongheaded decision without generations of testing and common people's self-development. The reason lies on: firstly, the spiritual, immaterial feature, which is far away from ordinary life, dooms to be ignored by common people who care more about the pragmatical merits instead of the far-away innovation or concept. Secondly, the deep and fresh idea, which rather than a mince advance but a stride instead,could not be comprenhened by contemporary society. For instance, the leading reformer of Q.C.Liang at the end of Feudalism society in China had realized the neccesity and urgency of reform, but no one understood him until the final ending of both the feudalism and himself. Since it is hard to unveil the superficial phenomenon and recognize the significance by ordinary public, it is no blame of contemporaries to ignore even undermine the greatness of the advert-先驱 .But affect our society in centuries. In the realm of art, most of the time, it is also in such case that the later-proved masterpieces have been disposed in the corner of the small and austere painting room without notice of public, let along appreciation. This kind of acceptance of the artist's greatness calls for time since it is buried / hidden deeply at the bottom of artist's heart. So as to the psychologists and some social researchers whose advanced or insight concept can not escape from being ignored by contemporaries.
   
Contributions vary from field to field. The combination of natural feature of contributions themselves and cognition of public determine whether they can be recognized, accepted and appreciated by contemporary society or next generations.
