No.1 Argument43 剧院那个 感觉自己越写越差
Argument43: 442 words 30 minutes
The following appeared as part of a business plan developed by the manager of the Rialto Theater.
'Despite its downtown location, the Rialto Movie Theater, a local institution for five decades, must make big changes or close its doors forever. It should follow the example of the new Apex Theater in the mall outside of town. When the Apex opened last year, it featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Furthermore, in a recent survey, over 85 percent of respondents reported that the high price of newly released movies prevents them from going to the movies more than five times per year. Thus, if the Rialto intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers, it must offer the same features as Apex.'
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before the Rialto Theater accepts the plan developed by the manager to follow the example of the new Apex Theater, scrutiny of the argument above should be carefully made. To support the conclusion, the manager mentionedmentions 原文引用用一般时吧,下同 the features of the new Apex Theater, and a result of a survey. However, neither this analogy nor the survey strengthenedstrengthens the conclusion.
First of all, the argument rests on the underlying assumption that the condition of the RT is worse than that of the AT's. However, this assumption is not supported by the argument. The manager only mentioned the features of AT's. As for the condition of RT's, he even did not referred to.这句话读起来不顺,但改也不知道怎么改,可能就换个说法吧 Maybe RT has far more audience than that of AT's, and therefore AT's experience is not worth studingcopying可能比较好; or RT has a even more appealing features than thatthose of AT's such as DTS audio, feedback instruments, and so on. Lacking these information, it is hasty to draw the conclusion that the experience of AT is worth studyingcopying.
Furthermore, the argument is also on the basis that the situation复数 of the two Ts confronting are similar. However, this assumption is also suspicious. As the manager mentioned, RT is located in downtown while AT is located in a mall outside of town. The quantity and preference of the residents in the two areas may vary significantly. It is quite possible that the people live in mall outside of town prefer action movies or disaster movies full of the去掉 violence of nature which need expensive instruments and brilliant这个形容词可不能乱用 environment while audience in downtown more like movies expressing emotion feelings这里表达的就有点~~~~中国式英语吧 such as love, fear, or hatred which do not need luxury environments. In this case, merely copycopying the experience of AT wouldmight婉转点 do nothing good but increase the cost.
To further support the conclusion, the manager mentioned a survey that indicates a decrease of audience isdue to the high price of movies. However, this evidence also cannot sufficiently lead to the conclusion. For one thing, the manager fails to prove the respondents are representative. Perhaps the respondents are mostly composed byof elder citizens who prefer a lower price, but they are not the biggestlargest group of the audience. For another, even the survey truly expressed the opinion of the majority of audience, itthe arguer still cannot conclude that R should offer the same features as Apex, which would probably lead to a higher price and further diminishing the去掉 quantity of audience.
In conclusion, without the necessary information about RT, without consideration of the similarity of the two Ts, without the representative and a fully understanding of the survey, it is unwise for RT to copy AT's experience.
写的还是不错的,就是时态引用可能有待商榷。特别闪亮的是开头结尾,很欣赏,可以借鉴一下:) |
