Issue205 越写越长,受不了了。考前冲刺,大家帮忙砸砖啊!
"As societies all over the world have more and more access to new information, the effects on life-long learning can only be positive."
During an era of ever increasingly rapid growth in science and technology, people have found more and more facts, information and theories about what is taking place in the surrounding world. As a result, we are now experiencing an era of "information explosion", in which people have surprising amount information accessible during their lives, and the most important, in the process of learning. While there are many advantages brought about by the tremendous amount of information, some bad effect on the life-long learning should not be simply ignored.
As long as science and technology step ever further on the way to the truth, people have gained more about themselves, about things happening around them, and the world they are living in. Many field of science and research develop so fast that when one wants to have a look at it, he may surprisingly find that how much information he should obtain before he can go any further. For example, the field of Behavioral Finance, a newly formed interrelated subject, the study of which needs both information concerning about finance and psychology. Knowing information only about one subject is not enough, but rather, we should have more. And this a problem faced by many learners today.
Fortunately enough, still with the rapid development of technology, especially the ever more rapid advancement of Internet, societies all over the world have more and more access to new information. When a presidential vote is just finished in the previous day, the next day people all over the world can learn the preliminary result. Whenever there is a war broke out, the global citizens can all have access to the information about what is going on at the battlefield. When it comes to the field of education, and further extended to the process of life-long learning, the ability of sustainable supply of information can have a positive effect from which the learners and scholars can benefit a lot.
Learning and education start early in one's life span. During the period of school education, in the past we had to focus our attention primarily on the text books available and if we wanted some extra information, we had to find somewhere to borrow it. Many times we might feel frustrated that the information in need is not always accessible. But now, with the development in the global network, this is no longer a problem. When we are in need of some information that is not at hand, we can just go online and find them out. For example, if someone is doing research on the issue that what should education primarily concern and what should a person be when he finishes formal education, he can go online, open the index page of Google, and enter the keywords "the purpose of education". A simple click on the button can result in great amount information, in which he may surprisingly find that famous scientist Einstein had once stressed his idea of education that interest is the best teacher. We can quickly find what we need with much convenience and therefore can concentrate our attention on the study of the topic itself, not having to waste time in finding them. In fact, seeing the advantage of convenience and quickness, many schools and teachers are now encouraging students to do their research by searching for whatever information he needs on the Internet. It is helping students to develop a habit of independent learning.
As someone leaves school and start to work, he still needs learning, and still he can gain benefits from more and more information accessible. When there occur some problems in the process of management, we may want to learn something about it in supplement to our existing knowledge. And still, information can be found on-line, and this time we find the famous innovation, the "six-sigma", invented by the former CEO of the GE, Jack Welch. We learned that the reason for our previous low efficiency is that we did not introduce precise measurement in conducting our strategies, and now we know what direction we should head on. Throughout our life, the same situation can take place thousands of times, and remember, that's the positive effect brought by the increasing amount of information accessible.
However, there are some problems relating to the explosion of information. A portion of the information that cannot be simply ignored is something related to sex, violence, and others such as abuse of drugs, the access to which can do a lot of harm to people's mental health, especially to those juveniles. Therefore, in the process of learning, we should pay great attention to regulating these kinds of information, preventing them within the reach of people, especially children.
With the continuing stress on the explosion of information, and its probable promising prosperity, we can expect ever more information that can be reachable to people. While this offers a sustained supply of information during the whole life span of a person and the process of learning along with it, some negative impact on people, especially those children, should be paid attention to.
