The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time.
------正文------
Today, people's efficiency has been substantially increased due to the rapid technological advances. Although there does exist the probability that contemporaries are becoming machinery addicts to some extent, and that they are mired in questions like junk mails and traffic jams, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that the central goal of technological advancement is to increase people's efficiency , while their leisure time is much less, if no more than ,that of their ancestors.
There is no known aspect of a modern life on which technology does not exert its influence. Transportation revolution has made it possible that people travel among cities and countries in few hours. Washing machine, together with microwave oven, has finally freed thousands of housewives and househusbands from the burdensome house chores. Students who want to look up to reference books may google them on the Internet: Compared to turning to a book store, googling it on the Internet is much quicker, of broad information, and free of charge. All these priviledges, deriving from technological advances, obviously save people a great amount of time and labor. In consequence, people's efficiency increases.
It is true that people's efficiency has been higher thanks to the technological progress. But is efficiency the main goal of it? However, many people benefit from high-techs in other ways, say, entertainment. Satellite television and radio give consumers more choices: news programs, talk shows, soap series and whatever attractive to audience. And Ipod and CD players enable people to enjoy music wherever they are, at the home or on the street. One need go no further to see that technological advances have also transformed the way people how to entertain themselves. But recreation is never given more emphasis than the efficiency to be the goal of technological strides. I cannot imagine a poor man who, not having any food to feed his stomach for three days, will use the welfare money he suddenly gets to buy a TV set(if he can afford it ) ,instead of a hamburger. In other words, when entertainments are found wanting by people, they seldom worry about their food and rent, which is impossible without the increase of efficiency. In this light, increase in efficiency is undoubtedly the primary goal of technological advancement.
Though efficiency has brought us some many benefits, people do not necessarily have more leisure nonetheless .Take a driver for supporting example. Before one reaps the convenience from his/her fancy car, it takes oneself considerable time, usually months, to exercise and acquaint traffic rules. For a student who googles a book on the Internet, as I mentioned above, to quickly and accurately get the book information he/she craves for, it means that he/she must spend hours on learning how to use a search engine first .However, for the potentials of technology to fully occur, expenditure of time on learning seems inevitable. As a result, when many people engage themselves in the mastery of whatever technological to keep pace with the others, there are less leisure time for them.
In conclusion, technological advancement is mainly directed to increase people's efficiency in almost every aspect of their daily life. And this increase in efficiency is accompanied by the diminishing leisure time at people's disposal, much of which has been spent on learning.
