On the other hand, however, it is people who are mired in extraordinary disappointments that (often) turn to astrology and fortune-telling, which have already been proved to be fake or misleading by the main science. A mother, for example, whose hopeless baby is sure of death in virtue of a deadly disease, will probably goes to a fortune-teller, hoping that her baby's life may be spared. And the participant may even be a highly educated young man. When he cannot find a job in the economy depression, irrationally and gradually he might have hoped that astrologists will tell him that, in a certain future, he will get a job. We cannot deny the fact that technological advancements, no matter what high level they have achieved, cannot address the individual problems described above. Thus, people who are suffering extreme emotional or material hardship will be the potential participants of such fake science as fortune-telling and astrology.

While non-mainstream knowledge may offer people either interest-inspiring understanding of the world and people themselves, or mental comforts as well as meaningless hopes, they are generally harmful. Psychic and other paranormal lovers may spend too much time and energy on abortive researches as such, which will in turn impair their daily work or school performance. For astrology and fortune -telling obsessives, the situation is much worse, because they are endangered of being manipulated by pseudosicience. When the mentioned  young man, instead of making an endeavor to find new job opportunities, but lies heavily on the astrologists about his future career, he then becomes the slave of the fortune-telling.
