207"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as rituals and ceremonies play a vital role in defining a culture, for the reason of rituals and ceremonies, to a large extent, represent the feature of culture---- in such ways as celebration, mores, and the like. However, aside from rituals and ceremonies, there are some other ways to help people retain a cultural identity.
(仪式和礼仪帮助人们保持文化)
Rituals and ceremonies satisfy people's instinct need of being including in a certain group of people. By nature, people are seeking for some culture features which are different from others, and claim that they have distinctive values, ideas and heritage. There are different sorts of culture represented by distinct rituals and ceremonies. For supportive examples, people should look no further than the wedding ceremony. In western countries, the bride and groom respectively wear write voile dress and black suit, and hold the wedding ceremony in church. While in China, wedding clothes usually are red traditional cheongsam and suit lobe. Similarly, Christians go to church and listen to priest to read Bible every week. Why these Christian have to listen in church, rather than read scripture at home. Because, this is rigid habit and pattern handed down from generation to another. Through this way, they claim to others that they belong to the loyalists of Gods. Therefore, distinct rituals and ceremonies help people retain a sense of cultural identity.
(仪式和礼仪帮助人们团结抵抗文化侵略)
Rituals and ceremonies help people with the same beliefs unite together and provide a strong mental pillar to prevent the assimilation from outside. A case in point is African- American’s struggle with the cultural invasion. Nowadays, they still retain tradition rituals and ceremonies to frighten away evil spirits, to bring about weather conditions favorable to bountiful harvest and to entreat the gods for a successful battle. Similarly, Gypsy have experienced many time of ostracism and been regarded as inferior race by others. However, they never give up traditional customs and ceremonies by way of singing and dancing to encourage their people's bravery and hold optimistic attitude toward life. Besides, wherever an isolated person arrives at any other places in the world, they usually attempt to seek for some methods to retain his or her distinct cultural identity in order to tell other people where he or she comes from.
(除了仪式和礼仪,还有其他方式保持文化)
On the other hand, except for rituals and ceremonies, there exist many other methods to preserve culture feature. Firstly, through different dressing and behaviors, people inform people distinct areas they live and their religious beliefs. Via different living habits, people claim their attitude toward others and the world. For example, Eastern people are likely to touch others in order to present intimacy, while Western people tend to retain certain distance to display the sense of respect. In addition, different people have their own distinct languages. Under the impact of globalization, many less-known languages encounter the threat of extinction, but people are increasingly aware of preserving their own languages to present cultural identity. For example, in France, television and radio are allowed rigid time-range and channels to broadcast English programs, in order to preserve the dominant role of French there.
In conclusion, rituals and ceremonies are necessary in preserving the cultural identity. Because rituals and ceremonies can inform people themselves and others where they come from, what their distinct values, heritage and thoughts are. Moreover, rituals and ceremonies can provide psychological strength to unite people together to fight against cultural invasion. However, there are other methods which can help preserve cultural identity. |
