The arguer conclude that the water in the ocean of the earth originated from comets which hit the surface of the earth after it approached its current size and formed a cooled and solidified surface. The arguer’s conclusion is not well supported, for it is a hasty generalization based on several untestified assumptions.

Firstly, the arguer fail to convince me that there are enough comets which hit the surface of the earth to make the vast ocean covered over 80% of the earth's surface. No evidence is provided to show the total amount of comets which had hit the surface of the earth or the frequency of the hitting. It is very possible that if the amount and frequency of the hits are enough to generate all the oceans on earth, several hits will be observed and reported every second, but actually such thing does not happen.  And if it is the hitting of comet brings water and the gravity of the earth holds the water, then, other planet which have the same or more gravity than the earth which can attract the same or even more amount of comets and meanwhile hold the water must have the same or even more amount of water than the earth, but such phenomenon is not observed.

Secondly, the arguer does not preclude other possible reasons that may contribute to the formation of the earth’s water. During that period of time, the earth itself was undergoing several intensive chemical and physical changes. The water may result from chemical reactions, which, according to some scholars, cause the formation of life, one of the most unbelievable phenomenons ever existed, occur either on or under the surface of the earth. And also, the arguer simply assumes that the comets are the only things that carry water, but provided no data to testify it. As the circumstance of our cosmos is very complicated and varies every minute, it is very possible that the earth got water from something other than comets.

Thirdly, the arguer did not prove that after the earth’s surface has cooled and solidified, the heat of the collision can still melt the comets. And if the heat is not enough to make the comets vaporized, no water vapor will be retained in the atmosphere, and no rain resulting from the comet vapor will fall, thus the formation of the ocean will not be resulted from the comets.

In conclusion, the arguer can not make me believe the assertion that the water of the earth is originated from the comets which hit the earth. In order to make this argument more convincing, the arguer should offer more information as evidence to show that, there are enough comets that had hit the ground, and they truly vapor, and preclude other possibility that may provide water for the earth.

对这段不敢苟同——comets strike Earth，假若Earth的temperature不高不足以直接融化comets，但是strike时与atmosphere的摩擦产生的heat也会融化comets的，况且comets要是真的掉到Earth上来，带有水的成分，即使不用变成water vapor然后rain ，那comets只要掉到ground也照样把水分带到Earth来——以冰之类的形式；然后也会变成水继而流进oceans；虽然，那些冰不一定就融化到海里，可题目的结论是the water in Earth’s oceans must have originated from the comets；这样来反驳arguer’s claim就不好了吧～

In conclusion, the arguer can not make me believe the assertion that the water of the earth is originated from the comets which hit the earth. In order to make this argument more convincing, the arguer should offer more information as evidence to show that, there are enough comets that had hit the ground, and they truly vapor 这个就不一定吧，理由同上, and preclude other possibility that may provide water for the earth.
