------题目------
Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin—a hormone known to affect some brain functions—would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these children—now teenagers—who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.
------正文------

The arguer claims that melatonin can cause infant shy and the shyness will continues into his later life. In order to support his view, he illustrates a study which shows the shy infants are morel likely to be conceived in early autumn.  He points out that autumn is the time for mother to produce melatonin. A further study illustrated by the arguer shows that more than half of the children tested in the first study are shy. The arguer's view seems plausible, it commits several logic flaws.

First of all, the first study illustrated by the arguer is not convincible. The arguer fails to offer any information about how these babies are selected. So whether the study is objective is still in doubt. And also the number of infants who are tested in this study is too few. Furthermore, common sense tells us that infants are naturally shier than adults. Perhaps almost all the infants show signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar things. A more comprehensive study is needed.

Moreover, the arguer needs at least some evidences indicating mothers produce melatonin in autumn and melatonin can influence some brain functions. Even mothers do produce melatonin in autumn, a further examination is needed to convince us that it is melatonin but not other substances affect infants' shyness. Another possibility is that it is gene but not any hormones decide children's shyness.

Last but not least, the follow-up study can't sustain the arguer's view for the reason that not all the teenagers are shy. If the arguer's view is tenable, all the children affected by melatonin will be shy in their later life. A more convincible possibility is that the shyness of the children is formed from their later life.  As specialists tell us, environment can influence personality greatly.

In the final analysis, the arguer's view that an increased level of melatonin before birth is the cause of shyness is well-presented but not well-reasoned. As the text above analyzed, the arguer fails to demonstrate the correctness of the first study and also fails to correlate the production of melatonin and infants' shyness. The follow-up study illustrated by him can't sustain his view either.

The arguer's view seems plausible, however in my point of view,it commits several logic flaws.
