Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
Generally viewing the human history, ritual and ceremonies are significant parts of a culture. By developing of globalization and generalization, rituals and ceremonies are gradually simplified and even going to disappear in some regions. Without them, societies or groups of people may have a diminished former sense of who they are, but they will form new sense according to the new situations.
To begin with, in current society, people lead more quick speed lives and simplify many traditional rituals and ceremonies, which help define a culture. Ritual and ceremonies as the traditions in many regions and countries for hundreds of thousands of years represent the aspects of culture then. But the content of culture has been variational all the time. Considering the Hui, a minority of Chinese Muslim, its believers did not eat pork before due to their religious belief. However, more and more current generation of Hui eat pork now and have fewer characteristics of their folk and religion. Many of them emigrate from their former resident places in Ningxia province to a broad region from south to north in China, and no longer have white hats and folk costumes. Certainly, they disseminate their folk characters representing their culture while absorbing new culture from other places. A case in point is the Muslim food as an example of their dietetic culture. The Muslim noodle is famous around the country nowadays and is made for other non-Muslim people in an improved way.
Furthermore, with the development of science and technology, people around the world become more assimilative than they were before, and have the common culture. Since there are more tools and means to broadcast and diffuse factors of culture from different places, such as music, novels, paintings etc. For instance, the Internet has contributed to connect people from all around the world closer than before. People with different culture communicate with each other on the Internet freely and exchange their ideas and opinions. It helps to broad their horizon, learn from more respects, and improve their minds to form a new social culture as a whole. So people would not have a diminished sense of who they are, but develop their senses or form another new one to suits the contemporary culture.
To sum up, ritual and ceremonies help define a culture, but do not the only factors of a culture. More and more new scientific and technical innovations, such as TV, mobile phone, help to shape the current culture. Maybe there will be many other things to reform the culture the next generation. And people at that time have another kind of sense. |
