------题目------
Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
While the main function of rituals and ceremonies is to help people know clear who they are, where they are come from, and what they belong to, the people from one society or group can easily tell who is of the same kind by exchanging some form of rituals, such as greeting words, body language, or gesture, etc. However, when the people leave the circumstance where he or she originally live, they will probably feel lonely since there are no people of same kind to share something, but they will not forget who they are, they just bear the mind into the bottom of their hearts.
To begin with, rituals and ceremonies can truly define a culture. The study of history can tell us that the ancient people were profoundly religious. From primate tribes to Maya civilization, there are many rituals and ceremonies defining the culture at that time. A vivid example of preying for good harvest in ancient times can help us define such a culture. Similarly, in the primate tribes, people danced surrounding a fire to get together, to celebrate, to prey, to exorcise, or to commemorate. At the times when the technology and civilization ere not developed, it is the rituals and ceremonies that help the people define who they are, where they are come from, and what they belong to.
However, with the development of society and technology, people from all over the world can travel around the Earth with great ease. Multi-culture brought by the Internet, to some extent, is really closing the gap between the people from different areas. At this moment, it seems like everybody is in the same circumstance and the difference is becoming diminished. However, the fact tells us this is not the case. Like China Town in New York, every state has its own China Town, and every country, if there are Chinese there, has its own China Town. In this area, the Chinese are getting together to share the same rituals and ceremonies they are ever used to. Perhaps someone may say this is not the truth about the societies or groups of people having a diminished sense of who they are without rituals and ceremonies. Retrospect to the early stage of their immigration, those individuals who were used to the Chinese rituals and ceremonies were coming to a totally different circumstance and they needed to use wholly different language to communicate or even to think. After a long period of time, they were obviously getting used to it, but why they set up China Town? The reason is they did not diminish the sense of who they are.
Admitted, as the rapid pace of society, a huge number of civilizations that have ever thrived for a fairly long time are diminished. The development of technology is both blessing and a curse. It helps us generate new rituals and ceremonies as a culture, at the mean time, it also diminishes some of the human treasure-cultures.
In conclusion, from ancient times to modern society, with the help of rituals and ceremonies, people can distinguish each other from a mass of people in that the rituals and ceremonies can truly define a culture. However, to a greater extent, man from on society will not forget who they are, where they are come from, and what they belong to, because the culture has long been curved into their minds and beard into the bottom of their hearts. |
