The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.
In this highly modernized period, our society is full of choices.
Actually, choices exist in almost all the spheres in our lives. For example, due to the development of the economy, there are enormous commodities in our daily lives and we have to choose among them. This is a choice in term of consumption; in some democratic nations such as America and Canada, people there have the rights and freedom to elect their president, governors, mayors...etc. This is a choice in term of politic; more generally, in our daily lives, there are more choices we are making such as friends, job, dwelling place and so on. From these examples we can find that we have much freedom and oppotunities of choice. In fact, we are making choices every day in our lives.
But there is a phenomneon seeming quite contrary with the statement above that we often heard people grousing that they have no choice but to do something. However, in my opinion, those people also have made choices or have choices to make indeed. For example, some people complain that they have to work everyday and have no other choice. But we can clearly note that there is a premiss that those people want to live better lives, i.e., they have already made a choice between working to live better and having free but uncomfortable lives. And a more common condition is that the people complaining of no choice ignore some other choices in fact.
Futhermore, the freedom and rights to choose is a elemental character of a modern society. As it is mentioned before, a democratic society must allow its residents have suffrages; a highly developed country must ensure its residents have a large quantity of commodities to choose in order to live more comfortable; In brief, a modern society must ensure the rights of choice for its residents in almost every sphere of human life.
Although the freedom of choice is a essential right of modern human, but we still have much to do with this freedom because the level of this freedom in different nations differs rather surprisingly. As we know, nowadays, the people in the developed countries have a much more freedom of choice compared to those living in the developing countries. A developed country have a more prosperous economy than a developing country, so it can offer much more various commodities than a developing country, so the people in it can are more free to choose than those in a developing country. The case in political sphere is similar. A developed country usually have a more democratic system than a developing country, then the people in it have a more loose political circumstance, and they can represent their opinion more free than those in a developing country. To make our world a modern society as a whole, we have to eliminate the difference in the freedom of choice among different countries.
Certainly, there are circumstance we have no choice indeed: we can not choose our gender, our parents, our race and complexion...etc. But these are all the natural characters which we do not need to care much.
In conclusion, I agree with the statement that the absence of choice is very rare, and I want to point out that we still have to enhance people's freedom of choice in order to make our world more civilized. |
