issue 38. In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was, people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. (Words: 313 40min)
I do not agree the statement that watching television is more important. In my view, reading books and watching television are not substitutes for one or another, but just can support to each other. That is, they are both very important to people’s life.
To begin with, no one would deny the high-tech booms in our world. We have chances to acquire information and study not through the books, through the classes, but also through the media like internet or the television. The vivid images and striking presents make us understand better. Comparing with the tedious textbooks, I suppose most students would love to watching television to understand a culture of a nation. Similar to most other fields such as history, humanity, sociology and so on.
However, with more and more things not useful to our studies at all like advertisements, our study would be less effective. I have so many painful experiences of being interpreted when watching television absorbed. And also, there always be many interesting pictures or other images absorbing our eyes, which make us forget our initiate goal. That should be the most harmful to our study.
Unlike the television, we can feel a completely different world by reading books. Literatures tell us the value of life, the meaning of love, and also many other things. Science books teach us the principles of the universe. As a mathematic major student, I learn so much through the books such as the theories and principles, and the logic reasoning abilities which would never attain on the television. Furthermore, we have a systematic study in the books. From a library, we choose the books in our intentions and purposes. Yet only can accept information through television.
In short, both watching television and reading books are good teachers to us; the most important matter should be how to combine them well in our study.
