题目:In most professional and academic fields, imagination is more important than knowledge.
----------------
Is imagination more important than knowledge, in most professional and academic fields? In my view, imagination is the major force that urge science and technology advance. However, knowledge plays an equally important role.

It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that imagination contributes to most of the ground breaking discoveries and inventions. Imagination is sometimes more valuable than knowledge, in that it can help people approach a problem without constraints of established habits and attitudes. As is commonly accepted, creative works are the major process and task in scientific research, which is driven by imagination. As a result, almost no sciences advancement would happen if human minds lack of imagination. While creation is the horse of a carriage, imagination is the coachman who directs the carriage and urges the horse on. Moreover, imagination is especially important in certain science and art fields which are not based on knowledge and data. In ancient Greece, philosophers perceived the meaning of life or how the universe formed mainly through imagination, because there was no prior knowledge before them, nor was it possible for them to obtain data, due to the technology limitations at that time. Therefore imagination is the primary factor in most professional and academic fields.

However, the foci would be too narrow if we over-emphasize on the importance of imagination, while ignoring the impact of knowledge on professional and academic fields. Almost any science advancement is based on the improvement and complement of existing knowledge. Eintein refered to the data of over 20 experiments as well as existing theories attempting to explain them, and established relative theory. Any major paper published on 'Nature' today refers to an average of 22 prior research papers. Newton said:" I stand on the shoulder of giants, therefore I could see farther than other people." In addition, even if the prior knowledge is partly wrong, it still contributes to the birth of new theories, in that it is always the question and challenge of prior knowledge that lead to major scientific advancements. Thus knowledge is also important in research and professional areas.

Admittedly, some might argue that in professional fields imagination could be neglected because such fields only demand workers and technicians doing repetitive works. Yet this is not true in that even workers and technicians need imagination to better approach their tasks. A lawyer needs imagination for reasoning to win a court. An architect needs imagination to design a building. A policeman needs imagination to deduce and uncover a case. Obviously, if no imagination is required in such fields, they would be entirely replaced by robots. In addition, it is quite common to see workers solving production problem in factories. My friend recently receive a prize of $1000 for solving a switch problem on the lathe, while all of the other engineers failed to do so. Therefore imagination is also important in professional fields.

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is partly true. While imagination is the stimulations that urge the horse of scientists on, knowledge is the carriage of science that the horse pulls. Without stimulations, the horse would not move. Without carriage, movement of the horse is meaningless. Imagination and knowledge are equally important. Science and technology advancements are based on the interaction of the two.

It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that imagination contributes to most of the ground breaking discoveries and inventions(你后面在肯定imagination, 但是你却用了tempting… Imagination is sometimes more valuable than knowledge, in that it can help people approach a problem without constraints of established habits and attitudes. As is commonly accepted, creative works are the major process and task in scientific research, which is driven by imagination. As a result, almost no sciences advancement would happen if human minds lack of imagination. While creation is the horse of a carriage, imagination is the coachman who directs the carriage and urges the horse on(第二次看到了,^_^). Moreover, imagination is especially important in certain science and art fields which are not based on knowledge and data.(自相矛盾!) In ancient Greece, philosophers perceived the meaning of life or how the universe formed mainly through imagination, because there was no prior knowledge before them, nor was it possible for them to obtain data, due to the technology limitations at that time. Therefore imagination is the primary factor in most professional and academic fields.(从moreover后面开始, 我觉得有问题! 既然已经排除了areas not based on the knowledge, 就没啥可比的了!)

(赞!)In addition, even if the prior knowledge is partly wrong, it still contributes to the birth of new theories, in that it is always the question and challenge of prior knowledge that lead to major scientific advancements. (这一点偶没想到,值得学习!----即knowledge可以分为right and wrong)Thus knowledge is also important in research and professional areas.

Admittedly, some might argue that in professional fields imagination could be neglected because such fields only demand workers and technicians doing repetitive works. Yet this is not true in that even workers and technicians need imagination to better approach their tasks. A lawyer needs imagination for reasoning to win a court. Obviously, if no imagination is required in such fields, they would be entirely replaced by robots.(????

Absolutely not!  Technology? No, again. 你同学的专业知识也许本来就比那些工程师们好,凭什么因为他是你的朋友就证明knowledge not so excellent as many other engeneers?

” not based on knowledge and data.(自相矛盾!)“
