Social harmony, not the same thing as blind conformity, depends on interactions among persons and communications between different cultures. And, one of the primary aims of education is to nurture students' thoughts and emotions, hone their ability to question and criticize, and lead them to promote social harmony in an active way.

In the society, there are always old traditions and established values not worth adhering to. Our society needs such kind of people who dare to question and criticize, who do not care for pain or gain, and who sincerely take the responsibility of promoting social harmony. In the middle age, most countries were controlled by monarchy, a social system which forbidden the freedom of speak. It seems that people had got conformity but in fact there lied severe conflicts among each social class. And in a long period of time, the governed people had led a hard life. Later the capitalism came out to challenge the old social system then led to social reforms and revolutions, bringing about the world democracy and science. Take nowadays America for example. As is known to all, America has two major parties---Republican Party and Democratic Party. It is just because of the mutual questioning and criticizing between both of them that the whole society benefits---citizens' human rights assured, democratic awareness enhanced, and social harmony promoted. From this example we can see the significant role of questioning and criticizing, without which the potential conflicts of a society will burst out sooner or later. Thomas Jefferson, one of the greatest American presidents, once said:"It is conflict and not unquestioning agreement that deeps freedom alive. In a free country there will always be conflicting ideas, and this is a source of strengh."

Fortunately, one of the primary aims of education is to encourage students to think, question and challenge. In grade schools and high schools, the emphasis of education is not the actual subject knowledge but the study habits, the ability of critical thinking and higher order analytical thought process. And it is the universities' responsibility to teach students to think about the problems of society and human beings. In this sense, education in point promotes social harmony.

Finally, we should be aware of other issues. Because of the knowledge limitation and lacking of enough life experience, students inevitably make false judgments of our society at times. It has been said that students (or youngsters) are groups of people who are easily utilized by the others, epitomized in the 1989 student case of China. Influenced by the current media voice, many students in Beijing held times of social convulsions which destroyed social harmony in a national scope. Therefore, to students, they should learn about the ability of independent thinking and reasonable criticizing.

All in all, social harmony needs a balance between conformity and inconformity. It can be obtained through generosity and tolerance among persons and further improved by questioning and criticizing, which is an original result and primary goal of education.
