Who,as it is widely discussed, gives sociey something of lasting value, the artist or the critic? Conceding that the cricic, sometimes may inspire our feelings ,I would hold that it is the artist who gives us the most valuable masterpieces containting lasting significance.
What do we feel when we hear a classic song , or when we see the elegant ballet performance? It is pleasure, and the pleasure only can felt by oneself. The pleasure we gain from art--- either from a song , or a ballet performance, or any other forms of art, is true to each individial, and therefore ,it is of the individual nature that no one else could stand to gain the same .The first and foremost thing art brings to us is the emotional influence that artist trying to convey ,which can only be experienced by ourselves, but not the critic ,however professionsl they might be.
Another reason why we enjoy in art is the beauty , beauty of different kinds . It is hard to find out a sandard or critirea for judging the art.Which form is the most superior one? Or which work is the best among a variety of masterpieces?Different people would have different opinions, and their ideas are based on their own feelings and individual aesthetic standards. At the sight of Mona Liza, many people can feel beauty, but what kind of beauty is it or why do they think it is beautiful? The answers arise may as much as the people who answer it.And Van Gogh' sun flower, is another illustration shed light on this point.Though it was not regarded a great work during his life, the significane containging in it was discoverd by the later generations. Why the picture give rise to so distinct judges? The aesthetic standards of people in different backgrounds are distinct , sometimes are far more we can feel.thus no matter what the critic evaluate a piece of art, each individual is the one who hold the right to judge on their own value and standard. And only through one's own judgement can one really understand and appriciate the beauty of art.
Art can remind each individual memories of differet kinds.Same piece of art might arouse different feelings and different experieces or sometimes different persons in one'mind.why? It was due to the experiences in life---both happiness and sufferings, all those things in life remind us totally different things when we see the indentical art.Novels can serve as a illuatration for the point.Take shakespear's Romeo and Juliette, for instance.some people are moved by the pure love between them, while others might feel the kind of love is out of existence, since the readers have different experiences of love. How could a critic give rise to those feelings by only envaluing the novel.what the people in society cares is not what the critic say about it , but really the feeling a novel can give them.
Of course , under some circumstancs ,when the work of art is too abstract to undersand and appreciate by common people, critics do serve as a instructor to reveal the meaning of it.But, it is the society to deside whether the work has true meaning ;that is the significance conveying by the artist felt by each individual.
To sum up, it is the artist conveying the value of art to the society, the critics, may serve to judge its value ,but no matter what the judgement is, the lasting value of art would exert on individuals who can undersand and appreciate it.
