4The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.

"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and Fitch Realty—Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."

In this argument the arguer claim that if people want to sell their house quickly and with a good price they should choose Adams Reality rather than Fitch Reality. Based on several unstable reasons the arguer unfairly compared Adams with Fitch.

Firstly, the arguer says that Adams has more agents than Fitch, many of whose agents are working part-time. Using this fact, the arguer wants to suggest that Adams must have a better performance than Fitch. The arguer does not inform us about the quality of the agents. Maybe most of the agents in Adams are new comers in the field of real estate and are inadequate at selling houses. While for the agents in Fitch, although they are less in number and some are working part time, it is very possible that they have more experiences in selling, are more efficient in promoting the selling of the houses, and more skillful in communicating with clients. So, the arguer can not merely use the number of the agents and if they are part-time workers to make me believe that Adams has advantages over Fitch.

Secondly, the arguer claims that Adam have twice as high as revenue as Fitch, and the average house sales is more than Fitch. But these are insufficient evidences to convince me that Adams is indeed better than Fitch. More revenue and higher of average home sales illustrate make little sense. Maybe Adams’ more revenue means that they charge for the service of house selling and gain more from the clients. And the average price of the home sales can be affected by a lot of factors. It is probably that the condition of the houses listed with Adam is better or the positions of the houses are more desirable or the average acreage of the houses is lager and so on. The arguer merely compare the price of average house without mention the quality of the house which mainly determine the price is invalid to illustrate the service of the two real estate.   

Thirdly, the arguer use his or her experience of selling houses with the two real estate to demonstrate that Adams is more efficient, for it took Adams less time to sell a house with a higher price last year, than it took Fitch to sell another house ten years ago. The arguer commits a mistake of false analogy. Ten year is a long period, which can make great differences. Is there an inflation during the period which makes the increase in price? Have people's living standard rose and result in the rise of houses’ price? Have last year seen an economic boom which makes the houses sell more quickly? And as I have illustrated before the qualities of the two houses may be different which lead to different price. Without precluding these kind of situations the arguer can not make me believe that Adams is better than Fitch.

All in all, there are many failures in this argument. More information about the two real estate company is needed, before people make up their mind about which one to choose.
