In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.
------正文------
After television was invented, it has become an indispensable part of our daily life. Everyday, there are so many people sitting in front of it and spending so much time watching various kinds of TV programs. Is reading books not as important as it once was? Can people learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books? In my opinion, the answer is "NO". Reading books is always as important as it once was and watching television is only assistance to reading when we want to acquire the knowledge.
Television, full of dynamic images and sound, would give people deeper impression of the information. Admittedly, by watching TV, we can also get a lot of knowledge which we could not get in the books. For example, when we watch the program - "Discovery", we can see so many beautiful forests in the wild area which we have no chance to go to. Or we will "experience" the most exciting adventure with the leading archaeologists in the world and explore some miracles in a place far away from our homes. Those kinds of information would not be found in books. Besides, the television could help us in learning. The famous English Language Teaching - "Family Album USA", which is broadcast over 50 countries, is a wonderful video-based course. It consists of series daily life scenes. We could learn English by only watching the stories in the video as if we were in the scenes. So, as a new technology, television does benefit us in learning or exploring the world.
However, reading books could not be replaced by only watching TV. First of all, we have to learn and improve our lingual capability through reading books. We learn words, the sentence structures and grammar from the books. The memory rules tell us that we could not remember a word if we don't "see" it frequently. Secondly, books are so light that we could bring them with us anywhere while television could only be kept in one place. Furthermore, watching TV is a passive process while reading is active. When we read a novel, we could picture the image of the main character randomly in our mind. But if the novel is transferred to a teleplay, the image would be fixed by the actor. Besides, when we read a book, we can see the character's psychological activities described in text while we can only enjoy the performance of the actor in television and have no idea about what exactly he/she is thinking. So, without reading book, we would lose our own thoughts as well as the way of thinking.
With the development of technology, we can produce more and more vivid videos in television, which could help us to understand our world more quickly and more directly. But reading is always an important way when a child began to know about the world. Most of us would gain the fundamental knowledge in the books and most of the literatures and documents are still printed in paper.
In sum, although people could learn so much by watching television, reading books is always an essential way for us to learn about the world. |
